It was a windy few days in Corpus Christi during the Region IV tennis tournament last week, but the Punchers and Cowgirls prevailed to win 1st and 2nd in four of the five divisions and will represent Region IV in 14 of the 16 available spots at the State tennis tournament in San Antonio on May 20-21.
The Mason High School girls and boys varsity track and field teams competed on April 23-24 at the 2A Region IV Championships meet at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. MASON COWGIRLS With another outstanding all-around performance, the Cowgirls finished with 85 points as a team and won the regional meet with 85 points.
By John Pierce The UIL Academics team advanced 12 students to State and placed second at the 2A Region IV Academic Meet. This meet, held during the COVID-19 pandemic, was an especially challenging one. The contest was held virtually--but not from the school’s home campus. Instead, Mason competed from Thrall High School.
The 2020-2021 school year brought many new challenges to the cross examination debate participants. To not put students, teachers and judges at risk, meets were held virtually. By Andrew Salmi, Sports Editor The Mason High School varsity softball squad concluded its regular season on Monday, April 26 on a very high note as the Cowgirls blanked visiting Center Point High School by a score of 15-0 in just three innings. Two seniors, outfielder Aunnecy Elliott and first baseman Kendra Munsell, were honored for Mason’s annual Senior Night game at home. The Mason High School varsity baseball team continued its strong push towards a District 29-2A championship on Wednesday, April 21 when the Punchers held on for a 12-7 victory on the road against San Saba High School. With San Saba already leading 2-0 after the first inning, Mason took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second inning and never surrendered it the rest of the way after runs batted in by Ty Spencer and Cody McBee. On Saturday, April 10th Mason hosted the district 27 2A tennis tournament that included Center Point, Junction, San Saba, Johnson City and Mason. Mason earned 1st and 2nd in every varsity division qualifying all 16 entries to the Regional Tournament. In the Junior Varsity draw Mason won 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Boys Doubles, 1st and 2nd in Girls Doubles, and 1st and 3rd in Boys Singles.
On April 13, 2021 in Corpus Christi, Mason High School’s One Act Play entry, SILENT SKY, won the Region contest and will make the school’s 9th trip to the Texas University Interscholastic League’s OAP State Contest. The cast and crew hope to bring home a fifth state championship to add to the others won in 1966, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The oral critique judge, Don Luna of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, gave high praises.
The Mason High School boys and girls varsity track and field teams did exceptionally well on Wednesday, April 14 during the 2A District 29-30 Area Championship meet hosted by Harper High School with athletes needing a fourth-place or better finish in their respective events to qualify for the upcoming regional meet. The Mason High School varsity baseball team won both District 29-2A games it played the past week as the Punchers defeated Johnson City High School and Harper High School. MASON PUNCHERS 4, JOHNSON CITY EAGLES 3 In perhaps the biggest victory for the Punchers during the 2021 season, they avenged their lopsided 16-5 loss on March 23 to the Eagles as Mason went on the road to Johnson City on April 13 and held on for a crucial 4-3 win. The Punchers would end up striking first on offense.
