LBJ High School Freshman Dusti Welch won a $4000 scholarship for her 1st Place finish in the Painting & Mixed Media Division of the San Antonio Western Art Competition last weekend. The contest is held annually in conjunction with the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo with Grand Prize pieces sold at auction in January.
Eagles drop to 2A-Division 1
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced the conference cutoffs in their Biennial Reclassification and Realignment - the basis for the competition and playoff structure for all participating schools. Sophomore Karina Calderon and Freshman Avery Tumlinson earned All-Tournament honors in the LBJ Invitational Tournament last weekend. The Lady Eagles defeated the Fredericksburg JV and fell to Canyon Lake in the Consolation Finals of the eight team bracket. The Randolph Lady Rohawks defeated St. Mary’s Hall for the Championship. “Avery was our leading scorer and Karina did a good job on defense and distributing the ball in our offense,” said Head Coach Cori Baker.
By Julie Storer District 13-3A D2 coaches released their selections for All-District honors following the Comfort Bobcats exit from the UIL State Football playoffs in the Regional Quarterfinal round. The Johnson City Eagles garnered two superlative honors and six 1st Team picks for their performance which was highlighted by a 31-14 victory over rival Blanco in the regular season finale to secure the third-place playoff position.
The Lady Eagles Varsity fell to the Florence Lady Buffaloes in their District 25-3A opener last Tuesday at Florence. The Buffs charged out to a 10-4 lead in the first period which stretched to 25-6 at the half. The Lady Eagles won the second half scoring in double figures in the final two stanzas, but were unable to overcome the first-half deficit and fell by a final score of 50-35. Coaches from across District 25-3A showed their respect for the undefeated Champion Lady Eagles when making All-District selections for 2019. Senior Kalli Dalland was named Most Valuable Player after leading the Lady Eagles in kills and blocks in their perfect run through the sixteen game, double round-robin schedule. The Lady Eagles Varsity scored in double digits in each quarter of the first half and held the Center Point Lady Pirates scoreless in the second quarter on the way to a 33-20 road victory last Tuesday night. On Friday the tables turned with the Harper Lady Longhorns trampling the visiting JC team 64-9.
Board President Shelly Wenmohs called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 6 p.m. Former Board Trustee Kip Thompson gave the Invocation. Recognitions According to Cross Country Coach Kaznie Clark, the following students were recognized after competing for District in Jarrell: Akira Finegan, Maura Ibanez (8th), McKenna Cowsert, Lydia White (1st), Emma Burke, and Reed Moore (8th).
The Eagles 2019 season ended in the first round of the UIL State Football Playoffs with a 48-6 loss to the Tidehaven Tigers. Senior Cash Pearce had 119 all-purpose yards including a 79-yard kick-off return and the Eagles only score. Sophomore Quarterback Cade Boyer completed nine passes for 87 yards.
The Lady Eagles opened their basketball season with a 58-21 home loss against Cherokee last Tuesday night. Freshman Shelby Perrenoud was leading scorer with twelve points; Freshman Lydia White and Senior Kristine Henriquez added 4 points each. “We were patient offensively, but turnovers limited our ability to put more points on the board,” according to first-year Lady Eagle Head Coach Cori Baker.
