After racing out to a 5-0-1 record in the first week of the 2020 season the Varsity Eagles Baseball team scored four straight wins against 4A schools. In the first round of the Llano Invitational on Friday the host team got more than they bargained for as the Eagles held onto a 1-1 tie until the top of the sixth inning.
The Lady Eagles pulled off an upset of San Antonio Cornerstone to highlight a week of tough contests. Cornerstone suffered a loss to the eventual Blanco County Invitational Champion Blanco Lady Panthers – their only other loss in the tournament. Cornerstone jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead, but the Lady Eagles battled back with two runs in the top of the 2nd on back-to-back triples by Kori and Kamryn Fiero.
With eight returning starters from a 20-9/9-3 season that ended in the first round of the UIL 3A State Playoffs second-year Head Eagles Baseball Coach Steven Shipley expects his 2020 Eagles to be playing into June. “We have a lot of varsity experience returning this year, and a lot of athleticism,” said Shipley recently – before his Eagles made their 6-0-1 run in the first week of the season notching a no-hit shutout and a tournament Championship.
The Varsity Eagle Baseball team had a stellar opening week featuring a no-hit shutout against Natalia on Tuesday and a five win – one tie performance in the Comfort Invitational to win the Championship over the weekend. Butler was a four-year starter with a career which included the Lady Eagles’ most successful playoff run in 2011 that ended in the Regional Quarterfinals.
