Mason Independent School District’s superintendent had not been in his new office for long last year when COVID-19 became a daily headline and then gradually infiltrated rural Texas counties like his own. “COVID-19 wasn’t one of the topics in my superintendent education classes,” said Superintendent Stan Whittle. “I stepped into this role at the end of July, so when COVID-19 happened it was an interesting welcome to the job.” Whittle sees the timing in a positive light, despit ...

In comments late Monday, Mason County Judge Jerry Bearden reminded residents that Governor Abbot’s restrictions on restaurants and bars (as to capacity) automatically kick in when the number of active cases stays above 30 for an extended period. Mason County has just dropped to 38 active cases, with 13 pending, from 52 just prior to Christmas and a staggering 65 just after the holiday. If the number of cases rises, or does not drop above 30, he warned that restrictions will be necessary.
Animal was purchased in online auction, but payment never received
Mason County, Texas — It’s often said, “buyer beware,” but sellers should, too. Especially when the goods are worth thousands of dollars. On April 4, Kelsie Jordan Wright, 31, purchased a show steer for $3,001 in an online auction. She arranged for another buyer to pick up the steer and meet her with it in Canton.
Today is the day. Today. The day I have successfully avoided until it could no longer be. Each week Gerry would come in after we sent the paper to press and exclaim, “Darn it! We forgot to put you in the paper again. We need to get the story in next week,” and each time I would quietly reply, “Sure, no problem.
