Disagreement arises over proposed package store near Historic Church
A battle is brewing over the proposed location of package store near the historic Catholic Church in Mason. Earlier this month, a St. Joseph Catholic Church parishioner spoke at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in opposition to the owner’s request for a city zoning permit. “I’m not against liquor stores in general; the law has passed, but it’s just not a good location,” Judy Uherek of Mason told the News later.
By John Pierce The UIL Academics team advanced 12 students to State and placed second at the 2A Region IV Academic Meet. This meet, held during the COVID-19 pandemic, was an especially challenging one. The contest was held virtually--but not from the school’s home campus. Instead, Mason competed from Thrall High School.
On Saturday, April 10th Mason hosted the district 27 2A tennis tournament that included Center Point, Junction, San Saba, Johnson City and Mason. Mason earned 1st and 2nd in every varsity division qualifying all 16 entries to the Regional Tournament. In the Junior Varsity draw Mason won 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Boys Doubles, 1st and 2nd in Girls Doubles, and 1st and 3rd in Boys Singles.
Mason voters are in the process of deciding who will sit at the city commissioner’s table to represent District 2 and District 4. Early voting is underway ahead of Election Day on May 1. Running to represent District 2 are Melanie Eckert and Nicholas Garish. Current District 4 Commissioner Robin Lee is aiming to keep his seat against challenger Paul Smith. After around 6 months of construction work, the Mason County Food Bank is getting ready to operate out of its renovated facility next month. The cast and crew of SILENT SKY, Mason’s One Act Play 2021 entry, won Bi-district and are now preparing for Region in Corpus Christi on Tuesday, April 13. Students took home some impressive honors at Bi-district at Tivy HS on March 19.
