The Mason High School tennis team advanced to the 3A & Under State Team Tournament again this year after winning the Region IV tournament on Saturday, March 6th. Mason beat both Llano and San Saba 19-0 to advance to the State Tournament held in San Antonio on March 12-13. The fire at the Mason County Courthouse last month will add millions of dollars to the price tag of the renovation project that already had been in the works, but the county has formed a 7-person committee that will manage donations and fundraising to help offset the increased cost. “The committee is separate from the county, but is made up of Mason County residents,” said Mason County Judge Jerry Bearden. The members of the newly-founded “Friends of the Courthouse” committee are: ...
Statewide mask mandate reversal likely will not change much in Mason County
Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order that ends a statewide mask mandate goes into effect today, Wednesday, but folks likely will not see much of a change in Mason County. “Our businesses and restaurants have been at the 75 percent capacity level, so I don’t think there will be a lot of change when going to 100 percent,” said Mason County Judge Jerry Bearden. The governor’s executive order, GA-34, which was announced on March 2, allows folks to decide whether to wear a mask and all ...
Hugo Reichenau was a blacksmith in Mason, Texas whose shop stood on the Northwest corner of the square. 112 years ago, Mr. Reichenau watched as the most recent version of the courthouse was being built. Born on March 26, 1882; Hugo was about 27 when he would walk over to the construction site to chat with the carpenters and builders working there.
Congratulations to Chamber Hall of Fame Honoree, Gerry Gamel . Well known for his 22-year tenure with the Mason County News; Mr. Gamel’s sweeping involvement in and around the community made him a natural choice for this award. Instrumental in helping Mason residents expand their technical knowledge through computer use, crusading for internet service, creating the first web site for the Mason Chamber, and editing the Mason County News, Mr.
When Bridget Langdale half-jokingly suggested on social media that everyone should submit a photo of icicles forming during the recent ice storm that engulfed Texas; little did she know that it would turn into an inspiring sensation. Already wearied by a year of pandemic and all searing for some healthy fun; most took to the challenge enthusiastically. An artist and Master Naturalist, Ms.
Special congratulations goes out to each winner of the Mason County Chamber of Commerce Awards. This year’s award ceremony broke new ground with a video tribute presentation to honor the recipients of the Chamber’s highest annual recognition. In lieu of a live ceremony out of concern for the health and safety of Mason’s citizens; a video for this year’s community awards was produced to praise those recipients awarded by the Chamber’s members and community at large for their hard wor ...
It’s been a week of challenges for many folks in Mason County, thanks to the now-infamous winter storm, but many power and water issues have been resolved as of Monday. “One thing for sure: I’m NEVER taking electricity for granted again!!!” was one Mason resident’s jubilant post on Facebook recently. It wasn’t easy for anyone: even folks who retained their power spent much of the storm checking on neighbors who were enduring hard times. “I’m the one guy in 1 million who ...
From the article “ New Mason County Court House”
From the article “ New Mason County Court House” Description “The building is to have four main entrances, which are reached by broad flights of easy steps; these entrances are rendered dignified and imposing by massive columns and large porches which lead into the main hallway of the building.” There is a quote, “Let no one weep for me, or celebrate my funeral with mourning; for I still live, as I pass to and fro through the mouths of men.” The outpouring of memories wrought ...
Mason County received a terrible blow last Thursday night when our beloved historical Mason County Courthouse was destroyed by fire. There is no way to express in words the pain and anguish people felt when they watched their Courthouse consumed by the fire. I stood 25 feet away from the Northwest corner windows and watched the office where I had worked for the last 18 years go up in flames in just a matter of minutes.
