A Texas man is being held in the McLennan County Jail in lieu of hundreds of thousands of dollars in bonds after being accused of setting two fires last week in Mason, one of which left the historic county courthouse a shell of its former glory. Nicholas Jarret Miller, 41, was arrested after a police pursuit through several Hill Country counties.
Late in the evening of February 4, 2021, the historic Mason County Courthouse caught on fire. Emergency responders from Mason and surrounding communities responded to the blaze. By 1:00 A.M., February 5, firefighters had the fire mostly contained and were only attending to a few hot spots left in the structure.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating after a nighttime fire on Thursday left Mason County’s historic courthouse in ruins. The Star S Ranch in Mason County hosted 6 Mason High School students this past Saturday, giving these young boys the opportunity to hunt whitetail deer on the ranch. This is the third time that the ranch has hosted students from Mason. It gives them the opportunity to participate in a hunt and to really enjoy seeing whitetail deer and the many exotic breeds of animals that live on the ranch.
