Local youth Jarret Worrell recently had an impressive showing competing in the Texas Jr. Hereford State Show in Belton, Texas. This is the largest state junior breed show in Texas, with this year’s show hosting over 600 entries and 419 exhibitors. Jarret exhibited numerous animals and was awarded banners for Grand Champion Female, Reserve Grand Champion Bull, and Reserve Grand Champion Cow/Calf pair.
As Mason’s new Building Inspector, Ross Spallone, explained recently; “It’s a long way to Texas. Eight hours by air and twenty or so hours by car.” But once the decision was made; Texas was the destination for the Spallones anyway. The Spallones, Ross and Cindy, decided to make the move once their daughter, Amy and son-in-law Keith – an Infectious Disease physician and a Pathologist, were committed to work at M.D.
It seems like just yesterday that Mason High School’s class of 2021 received their diplomas and charged into the next phase of their lives, but the district already is planning for next school year amid all the uncertainty that the coronavirus brings. “I think our students really rose to the challenge and have been working hard academically throughout the year,” said Stan Whittle, Mason Independent School District superintendent.
“Hear my voice rise across the desert, my heartbeat echo for miles afar. Across the mountains and upon the sturdy shoulders of the Bighorn Sheep who carry me upwards, into their secret places. I am here.” This past August 2020; a young pioneer of conservation was lost not only to his beloved family, but to his community and to the world of preservation in Texas.
While street food is not necessarily a new concept; the diversity associated with it is only outmatched by the imagination. The Mason County Farmer’s Market is quickly becoming a showcase for food trucks and Cavo’s Cabana was there for the first market of this season. It's been said that we stand on the shoulders of those who went before us and we enjoy our freedoms because of those who fought to defend them. But let us never forget those valiant defenders of our rights who paid the ultimate price by giving their lives to defend our country.
With the conclusion of the 2021 UIL State Speech Meet last week, the Mason High School UIL Academics team completed one of its best ever seasons. The team placed 2nd overall in class 2A by earning 168 total points in state contests, just behind Sabine Pass High School’s 186 points.
Rebuilding Mason County’s historic courthouse will cost an amount of money that could only be described as monumental, but the county leaped forward when the state legislature recently allotted millions of dollars for the rebuilding project. With some help from Mason County’s state representative, Andrew Murr, the county will receive a $6 million appropriation that will be distributed through the Texas Historical Commission. Mason High School once again had an excellent showing at the State Tennis Tournament in San Antonio on May 20-21st. It was an all Mason final in the boy’s doubles, girl’s doubles, and mixed doubles and we also had one entry in the girl’s singles finale. After all was said and done, Mason players brought home four State Championships and three State Runner-up medals. In boy’s doubles, brothers Matthew and Bailan Kerr bested brothers Ty and Tate Spencer to earn the gold.
Fridays are known for fun, but this Friday’s Mason High School Graduation will be especially savored after a challenging school year. “Our students are so resilient!” said the Mason High School Counselor, Melany Canfield. “They adapted brilliantly to online learning last spring and were committed to wearing their masks, which cut down tremendously on the number of students who came down with COVID-19 or had to be quarantined.
