The 3-0 Center Point Lady Pirates arrived in Johnson City Friday afternoon intent on upsetting the favored 3-0 Lady Eagles to take the lead in the first round in District 29-2A competition. The host team showed great sportsmanship, but little hospitality in making short work of their guests in the three set victory (25-14, 25-11, 25-12).
The victory for JC came on the heels of a three set road win at Medina on Tuesday night (25-8, 25-6, 25-11).
The JC Junior Varsity continued their winning ways with a 28-18 victory over the Thrall Tigers at Eagle Field Thursday night. Thrall held a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles scored twenty unanswered points over the next two quarters and held on for the win.
Special teams were a highlight with a 62-yard punt return by Henry Martinez for the score and a kick-off return of 59-yards by Devin Smith that tacked on six more points.
The LBJMS White team defeated the Harper Lady Longhorns in a three-set match Monday night at Harper (25-18, 15-25, 26-24).
Avery Haley led the Lady Eagles with sixteen service points. Emaleigh Davis had a kill and a block. Marti Stevenson was a defensive stand-out as the Lady Eagles worked through a new line-up and rotation.
The Johnson City Eagles gave a packed Eagle Field plenty to cheer about and the visiting Boerne Geneva Eagles kept everyone in the stands with a nine play, seventy-yard drive that ended with the visitors on the 12-yard line as the clock ran out with JC leading 21-14.
The two teams traded punts in the first quarter and emerged deadlocked 0-0 with JC in possession on Geneva’s 18-yard line.
In a match-up of the top picks in District 29-2A the 15-10 Johnson City Lady Eagles prevailed over the 10-3 Harper Lady Longhorns in an exciting five set match to open district play for both teams.
JC struggled early giving the Lady Longhorns a 6-0 lead in the first set and battled back forcing the game into extra points only to suffer a 24-26 loss.
For the second consecutive year, a Johnson City Lady Eagle raced to the individual title in the Jacob Krebs Memorial Invitational Cross Country Meet 1A/2A Division.
Freshman Jackie Earley finished the course in a personal best 12:48.07 as the third fastest girl and top female small school runner. Taylor Grona of Fredericksburg won the 3A/4A Division with a 11:45.63., #23 Joey Smith 20:00.19.
Scoring early and often, the varsity Eagles took down the Ingram Warriors 55-0 on Friday night at Eagle Field.
Seven Eagles found the end zone and six more gained yardage on the ground or in the air as JC amassed 281 yards passing and 138 rushing. The Eagle defense stifled Ingram, not allowing a first down in the first half.
Johnson City failed to take advantage of their opening possession, turning the ball over on a third down interception.
Freshman Jackie Earley raced past the competition Wednesday afternoon to win the Championship in the 2A/1A Varsity Girls’ Division of the Fredericksburg Invitational.
Colin Linsey (20:25.78; 9th) and Antonio Perez (20:32.79; 10th) finished in the top ten of the varsity boys with teammate Joey Smith (20:39.35) close behind in 11th place.
Earley clocked in at 13:13.12 in the 2-mile course with Kamryn Loeffler of Mason in second place at 13:19.02.
