The Blanco Lions Club was founded in 1937 by Roy Byars and is an affiliate of the Lions Club International formed in 1917. The club’s mission statement is “Lions serve. The City of Blanco’s request to increase the amount of effluent water it can discharge into the Blanco River has been sent to a contested hearing. The commissioners of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted 3-0 on Dec. 18 to grant standing to three groups and five individuals, and referred 15 issues they brought to a hearing to be held in 180 days.
The children’s smiles were broad and bright in the Mother’s Day Out class at Blanco Elementary School when the school resource officer showed up, new books in hand. Officer Steve Harris did not just give the children the books, but he read them a story as they sat with rapt attention. “This was such a wonderful day for these children,” said Mother’s Day Out teacher Keitha Johnson.
The Hill Country is preparing for the Kinder Morgan Permian Highway Pipeline to begin construction. Kinder Morgan is still waiting on the its federal permit approval, but expects to receive it in early 2020, according to Allen Fore, Kinder Morgan vice president of public affairs. About 99 percent of the land has already been acquired and everything is ready to go for the PHP, Fore said.
In the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle, Henry House Assisted Living hosted an old-fashioned Christmas party to honor a special visitor on the afternoon of Dec. 17. Santa Claus, the jolly old elf himself, visited residents and others at the facility. Santa and Mrs. Claus were accompanied by a group of carolers from the Blanco Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, and even a few elves. A gingerbread house greeted attendees at the front door.
On Saturday, the air was warm, and the sun shone brightly upon the Blanco Historic Cemetery. It was a perfect day to honor veterans with Wreaths Across America. Mayor Martha Herden acted as master of ceremonies. Blanco Elementary School students went above and beyond to help those in need during the holiday season with a food drive that recently ended with hundreds of food items collected. The Student Council’s annual food drive has been going on for at least a decade, said Mindy Lay, school counselor. “It is a school tradition,” she said. The food drive starts every October, helping to kick off the school’s Red Ribbon Week.
Mayor Martha Herden called the Blanco city council meeting to order at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10. All council members, Martha Gosnell, Keith McClellan, Mayor Pro Tem Martin Sauceda, Tony Vela and Matt Lewis, were present at this meeting. Blanco was the place to be on Saturday evening, as residents and visitors alike were treated to a beautiful Christmas Parade which featured a variety of the Best of Blanco. The atmosphere was electric with excitement as children and families joyfully watched the floats go by, and the balmy 60 degree temperatures provided the perfect setting. In life you learn that there are certain perfect pairings – macaroni and cheese, Holmes and Watson, and now the Festival of Texas Fiddling and Twin Sisters Dance Hall is added to the list. Historic Twin Sisters Dance Hall welcomed the music, laughter and dancing of the 5th annual Festival of Texas Fiddling. The event was a celebration of the diversity of Texas fiddling.
