Johnson City native Bill Krueger was honored by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last week with the Morgan Wootten Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is presented annually “to honor those who have had a tremendous influence on the game and to provide a national stage to recognize them,” according to the organization’s website.
The Eagle Varsity Baseball team went 1-1 in a two-game home stand at McKinney Field last week, facing two contenders in the highly competitive District 25-3A. On Tuesday the Eagles got behind early as Jarrell sent two balls over the fence with runners on in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The Eagle 7th Grade Boys Track team scored 228 points to win their division in the Center Point Invitational Meet last Thursday outscoring runner-up Junction by 46 points. The 7th Grade Lady Eagles’ 149 points were forty better than runner-up Fredericksburg Heritage giving LBJ Middle School a pair of Championship plaques to take home.
Junior Kenzie Adrian joined a field of 7,201 high school, college and professional athletes who competed in the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays last weekend in Austin. Competing for the third year among an elite field of qualifiers in the Girls’ Javelin Kenzie marked a best throw of 108’7” to finish in 8th Place.
The typically hard-hitting Johnson City Lady Eagles Varsity Softball team managed just three hits against Jarrell and one against Blanco as they suffered back-to-back losses in district play last week. The visiting Lady Cougars came out swinging on Tuesday, scoring six runs on four hits in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the contest.
Thirteen is a lucky number when it’s your score in back-to-back district contests while holding your opponents to a single digit. The Eagle Varsity Baseball team did just that last week, trouncing Lago Vista 13-3 in five innings at home on Tuesday and rolling over Florence 13-7 on the road Friday. After a scoreless first inning Lago gained a 3-0 lead on two walks, a hit and an error.
With a schedule that takes them on the road for every match the Eagle and Lady Eagle Tennis teams are seeking out tough competition to get ready for the upcoming District 25-3A Meet. Dual matches at Blanco, Wimberley and Ingram have given JC an opportunity to hone their skills and test their pairings as they work to establish the most competitive combination of singles, doubles and mixed doubles players. The Lady Eagles Varsity Softball team fell behind early and were unable catch up as they dropped to 1-4 in district with losses to Lago Vista and Florence last week. The Lago Lady Vikings scored in every inning in their 14-3 win over the host Lady Eagles on Tuesday. Rylee Weirich homered for Johnson City and Bridgette McKennis tripled in the loss on Friday. Comfort High School swept the high school divisions of the Johnson City Invitational Track Meet last Thursday and Llano Middle School had a sweep of their own, winning all divisions on Friday. Johnson City teams were led by the JV Boys with a 3rd Place finish and 103 points, with the 7th and 8th Grade Girls each placing 4th in their team standings.
Before opening their regular meeting, the Johnson City School Board held a Public Hearing for the 2018-2019 proposed budget and tax rate. Public Hearing Assistant Superintendent Erin Fasel presented the tax rate for the upcoming year. The total tax rate was proposed at $1.1339. Maintenance and Operations tax was proposed at a rate of $1.04 and Interest and Sinking tax was proposed at $0.0939.
