During Tuesday’s regular council meeting, Council Members discussed courthouse sidewalk repair and took comments from citizens concerned about safety on Ranchview Dr. and taking a stance on the Johnson Amendment. In 2016, City employees worked hard to make Johnson City the best place in the Hill Country to live. More streets were paved, and this year, the rest of Pecan Street and several others will be paved. The City will be paving additional streets annually until all streets in the city are completed.
“Things, they are a changin’” Says the sign on the front window of The Old Lumber Yard. The complex that has stood the test of time is once again facing changes as it evolves with Johnson City. On February 1, 2017 The Old Lumber Yard will no longer be an antique mall, but will begin its transformation into an event space. Jesse and Sandy Kinman, owners of The Old Lumber Yard Complex since 1998, opened the antique mall in January of 1999.
The Blanco County Appraisal District held a special meeting on January 24,2017. The bulk of the meeting was a discussion on the recent surge in Public Information Requests. The Board of Directors also voted to raise the County Appraiser’s salary and took recommendations on additional Appraisal Review Board members. Appraiser Salary The Board voted to approve a transfer of $5,000 from the Deputy Chief Appraiser funds to the Chief Appraiser salary.
There are two weeks left to file for a place on the ballot for the local general election on May 6, 2017. This year voters will get to decide on Johnson City Mayor, three City Council seats and two JCISD School Board seats. First to file for this year’s election was Johnson City’s current Mayor, Dawn Capra.
The Johnson City School Board accepted the terms of Superintendent David Shanley’s retirement at a special meeting on January 25, 2017. His retirement will take effect on August 1, 2017. A statement released after the meeting said, “The Johnson City Independent School District has received notice from Superintendent David Shanley of his intention to retire, effective August 1,2017.” “On behalf of the entire District, the Board of Trustees expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr.
The Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department will buy 20 new handheld, two-way radios with a $23,169 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Pedernales Electric Cooperative. Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Roy Burdett said the department has long needed the radios, but their price put them out of reach. “We just didn’t have money for the new communication systems the federal government requires emergency responders to have,” Burdett said.
No one was injured after the bucket of a hydraulic crane came in contact with power lines outside the Pedernales Electric Cooperative headquarters on Thursday, January 19. That morning, contracted workers were removing Christmas lights around PEC headquarters on South Avenue F when the crane, also known as a cherry picker, reportedly touched power lines. After the first round of district play Coach Lewis Jenkins has his Eagles soaring. The Eagles are sitting on top in the district race with a 6-0 record. The high-flying Eagles traveled to Lago Vista Tuesday night and brought home an 11 point victory, 55-44. The Eagles jumped to a 5 point lead in the first quarter with Wells Deleon leading the way scoring 9 points in the period.
