Blanco County crews worked overnight Tuesday and through Wednesday to oversee cleanup operations and extinguish hot spots of a vegetation fire that consumed over 350 acres in rural Blanco County and injured none. The fire began early afternoon on Tuesday when reports say a resident near FM 1323 and Trails End Rd.
Mayor Capra gave the oath of office to a new City Council Member Tuesday night. Rosie Danz was chosen to fill the seat vacated by Mitchell Liesmann who resigned after moving beyond city limits earlier this year. The meeting went on to focus on a potential impact fee for new housing developments and finishing public works projects for this fiscal year. Impact Fees An impact fee of about $7000 is being considered for Johnson City and the extraterritorial jurisdiction.
All Commissioners except one were present at the July 11 Court Session. The South County Annex is getting closer to construction and took center stage at the meeting. Blanco County Judge, Brett Bray reported Commissioner James Sultemeier is doing well but is following his doctor’s order to rest at home. Ten days in the rain forests of Costa Rica sounds like a great vacation, but for ten Johnson City high school students and four adults, this was no picnic. “We were on the job-site by eight in the morning,” recalled Rusty Weirich, one of the adults from the First United Methodist Church. “We sweated in the tropical heat until three in the afternoon, when the day’s cooling rain came, then sweated some more in the higher humidity the rain left behind.
There were two fatalities in a crash that shut down HWY 281 for most of the day, Monday, July 3. According to a news release from North Blanco County EMS, on Monday, shortly before 11:30 a.m., a southbound DPS trooper spotted a Honda sedan traveling north on HWY 281 and swerving into the oncoming lane of traffic.
Andrei Tomescu, identified as the suspect installing skimmers in a Johnson City Bank ATM last week, is still wanted by Johnson City Police and Houston Police. Two suspects remain unidentified in the incident. Johnson City Police Chief, Randy Holland, reported they had issued four felony warrants for the seventeen year old Houston resident who installed skimmers in an ATM last week.
Blanco County Commissioners met for a budget workshop on Wednesday, July 5. Elected officials and other county funded entities were represented to present their concerns and budgetary requests. The workshop’s purpose was to discuss budget concerns and answer any questions Commissioners may have before formulating the final draft of the 2017 budget. Blanco, Dripping Springs, Marble Falls, Llano, Mason and now, Johnson City has joined the list of Hill Country cities that have adopted a lighting ordinance with the intention to reduce light pollution and preserve the view of the stars. Earlier this month, The City Council passed the ordinance which would limit the type and direction of lighting residents and business owners can utilize in town.
Kelsey Heavner, 21, of Johnson City graduated from the Texas Department of Public Safety’s 159th Highway Patrol Training Academy on June 16. She will soon make her move to Odessa where she has been stationed. Her first day on duty will be July 9. “The challenge I look most forward to is [living] out the Texas Highway Patrol mission which is to protect and serve Texas with Respect,” said Heavner. The Commissioners met for their regular court session on Tuesday, June 27 at the Blanco County Courthouse in Johnson City. Paving of the Courthouse parking and the County-Wide Cleanup took center stage at the short Commissioner’s meeting. Courthouse Parking Last week the Commissioners held a special meeting to move forward with repaving the parking areas around the courthouse.
