Commissioners discussed final adjustments to the 2017/2018 budget during last Thursday’s special meeting. Two citizens stepped up to speak during the public hearing for Blanco County’s tax rate and budget. No action has yet been taken to approve the budget.

Eagle Volleyball is off to strong start for the 2017 season. They put two wins on the record for beating Burnet High School last Friday and Boerne Geneva High School on Tuesday. This year the lady Eagles defend at Area Championship title from their playoff run last season.

The county commissioners proclaimed September “National Preparedness Month.” Commissioner Liesmann encouraged citizens to register with Warn Central Texas. The program enables citizens to receive emergency alerts about dangerous conditions and events. Individuals can register at www.warncentraltexas.org, Liesmann noted that some city offices are also equipped to register people.

The Hill Country Law Enforcement Association conducted its quarterly luncheon and meeting on Aug. 17, 2017, at the Southwest Center in Round Mountain, Texas.
Approximately 103 attended from various law enforcement agencies as well as local, county and state elected officials. Johnson City Police and Blanco County Sheriffs were represented at the luncheon as well as numerous agencies from around the Hill Country region.

Shop Smart on Tax-Free Weekend
This weekend (August 11-13) is the Texas Tax-Free Weekend and JCISD has posted the 2017-2018 Dress and Grooming Guidelines, as well as school supply lists for all campuses, so shoppers will be able to save money on supplies and buy clothes that comply with the dress code.
Both students and parents are encouraged to take the time to review the guidelines and supply lists before shopping and before the start of school.
The budget for the upcoming fiscal year remained a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Commissioners’ Court session. They sent the Sheriff’s proposed budget back for a few organizational changes and voted to approve a raise in taxes.
Tax Rate
After lengthy discussion and a short recess, Commissioners voted to raise taxes in the county to .3970, a rate just below the rollback rate.
Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department used a cost share grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service Rural Volunteer Fire Department Program to help purchase a slip-on unit that will increase the department’s capacity to save lives and property.
A slip-on unit is a complete self-contained firefighting system designed for a pick-up truck or custom-built vehicle platform.
