It was all Blanco all the time. The Panther varsity football team avenged its 2019 season-ending loss to the Johnson City Eagles in style as they rolled over their in-county rival with a 63-7 road win Friday. In 2019, the Panthers and the Eagles were in the same district. The Eagles came out strong in the final district game defeating Blanco 31-14.
The Blanco volleyball team started District 3A-25 matches with two shutout wins last week. The Lady Panthers opened league play Tuesday, Sept. 22 with a win over the Comfort Deer, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-11. They continued their stellar play Friday by defeating the Lago Vista Lady Vikings 25-18, 25-12 and 25-18.
Three Blanco cross country runners medaled at the Comfort meet held Saturday. For the boys, Hayden Dotson medaled with a time of 20:29 and finished 25th at the meet. Also for the Panthers, Joshua Ludolph took 30th place with a time of 21:24. Two Lady Panther harriers medaled at Saturday’s meet. Evelyn Trammell medaled with a 10th place finish, in a time of 13:51.
The Blanco junior varsity football team picked up a 21-6 win over Johnson City last Thursday. After a scoreless first quarter, Blanco took over after a punt at the Johnson City 42. The Panthers moved the ball down the field on a pass from quarterback Cameron Anderson to Estevan Lopez and carries by Fernando Palacios and Estevan Lopez.
Blanco used stifling defense and had seven players score as the Panthers took the bite out of the Bandera Bulldogs in a 61-6 win last Friday. The Panthers (3-1) took the opening kickoff and Cade Cress returned the ball to the Bandera 48-yard line. Nathan Tomlinson and Devin Newsome traded carries and moved the ball to the 25-yard line, before Cody Cross scored a touchdown on a 25-yard scamper.
Blanco wrapped up its pre-district schedule with wins over Burnet and San Antonio Home School. The Lady Panthers (11-6) had a five-set win against the Lady Dawgs Sept. 18 with set scores of 20-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17 and 15-11. Presley Young led the Panthers with 24 kills, two aces and 15 digs.
The Blanco girls finished sixth at the Wimberley cross country meet last Wednesday. Evelyn Trammell led the Lady Panthers with a 15th place finish in 14:17. Laci Cresswell took 28th in 15:04, Riley Edmondson finished 41st in 15:45, and Valen Edwards took 51st place in 16:49.84. Also for Blanco, Kenna Clark finished 52ndin 16:49.89, Lauren Anderson finished 53rd in 16:57, Daryn Kirkland took 54th place in 17:00, Ella West was 56th in 17:16, Kendall Kramer took 58th in 17:20 and Avery Nance ...
Blanco swept the competition in subvarsity football action last week. In the junior varsity game at Bandera last Thursday, Blanco won 14-0. Cameron Anderson scored two touchdowns and Joe Lopez scored on a two-point conversion. The Blanco Middle School 8th grade team topped Jarrell 14-0. Colby Murphree rushed for a touchdown and Wyatt Martinez scored on a touchdown reception.
Garrett Granberg, a Blanco High School graduate, was one of eight inductees named to the Wheaton College athletics hall of honor for 2020. The announcement was made Thursday. Granberg was an All-American selection at running back by D3football.com as a senior in 2004, helping lead the Thunder to a CCIW Championship in 2004.
The Blanco football team made the three plus hour drive east to Anderson to take on the Anderson-Shiro Fighting Owls. The Panthers used solid defense to defeat the Owls 34-9. The game was low-scoring early, tied 7-7 with a minute remaining in the second quarter. Baylor Smith scored the Panthers’ first touchdown with the PAT kick by Nathan Tomlinson.
