Emergency professionals in Blanco County Emergency Services District 2 have been very busy, Chief Ben Oakley told board members at their June 16 meeting. In addition to a surge in COVID-19 cases, Oakley said that regular calls have returned to a normal pace now that the state has started to re-open. “Everything is back to where it was before with things re-opened,” he said.
Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) was formed by Dave Lageman in 2018. An advisory board was created soon after and is composed of Lageman, Greg Hinton, Betsy Scheffe, and Mike Rieken. Today, there are 70 members who are all willing and eager to spread kindness and help the needy. Anyone can become a member of RAK by simply contacting Lageman via email at [email protected].
Blanco County Judge Brett Bray called the Tuesday regular meeting of the Blanco County Commissioners Court to order at 8:59 a.m. Commissioners Tommy Weir, Emil Uecker, Chris Liesmann and Paul Granberg were present, and the meeting was simulcasted online via Zoom. Because the meeting was simulcasted, citizens wishing to make a public comment were required to present at the meeting.
Blanco ISD has made several changes to its 2020-21 school calendar with COVID-19 in mind. Hoping to avoid any unknown impacts that forced major changes to school districts in the spring, Blanco ISD has built in 12 days in a revised school calendar that can be used for the impacts of COVID-19, if they are needed. “We do not know how COVID-19 will impact us next year, but this calendar is a way to be prepared,” said Clay Rosenbaum, BISD superintendent, on the school’s website. Two Blanco teenagers died Monday night as the result of a vehicle accident on U.S. Hwy. 281. According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, a 2013 Chevrolet driven by Jaley Brown, 16, of Blanco, was traveling northbound on U.S. Hwy. 281 when it left the roadway and struck an embankment at approximately 8:49 p.m., about 5 miles south of Johnson City. The vehicle rolled several times.
Many in the county are in the process of recovering from the pain of a pandemic; but for others, another kind of suffering has remained. “Our counselors have reported an increase in abuse with their existing clients, mostly because of employment loss, which leads to financial instability,” said Conny Steele, program director for the Highland Lakes Family Crisis Center in Marble Falls.
Keep Blanco Beautiful (KBB) and the City of Blanco host an annual Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off event each spring, but this year has been different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The city will be host the trash-off event July 6-11. The city yard will be open to the public for drop offs each weekday from July 6-10, from 8 a.m.
Kinder Morgan donated $172,000 to the North Blanco County EMS last Wednesday at the North Blanco County Emergency Station in Johnson City. Kinder Morgan representative Alan Fore said this was one of several donations planned for local organizations and services in Blanco County. “Judge Bray recommended many organizations, and the EMS and ESD was at the top of his list,” Fore said.
Mayor Pro Tem Martin Sauceda called the Blanco City Council regular meeting to order at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9. The meeting was broadcasted live via MyMeeting and the city’s Facebook page. Council members: Deda Divine, Matt Lewis, Keith McClellan, Sauceda and Mike Smith were present. The minutes from the May meetings were approved.
The June CoAPT meeting was called to order at 11:30 a.m. via Zoom by Amber Corder, program coordinator. Corder informed the other members that the summer Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) training will be offered virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She explained that the coalition will be able to afford sending more members since there will not be any travel expenses; CoAPT members that are interested should contact Corder.
