The July 15 meeting of the Blanco Coalition of Awareness, Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse was called to order at 11:30 a.m. by project coordinator Amber Corder, and was held via Zoom.
Corder provided a brief update on the Hidden in Plain Sight event. Creating a virtual room to explore was discussed and training for teachers will take place soon.
Next, the coalition members watched part of a webinar that focused on how to implement strategies virtually.
There are 69 active cases of COVID-19 in Blanco County as of Monday morning, according to the Blanco County Office of Emergency Management.
Active cases jumped five in the last week and 18 in the past two weeks. Recoveries moved from eight to 11 in the last week. There are currently 40 cases under investigation, compared to 51 a week ago.
The five new confirmed cases were previously cases under investigation, the BCEM said.
A new sign acknowledging the donation from Marci and Louis Henna now graces the Blanco County Community Resource Center (CRC) in Johnson City. The Hennas made a generous donation in April.
Marci Henna grew up in Johnson City. As the owners of the Henna Chevrolet auto dealership, the Hennas are a well-known name in Austin.
Among the changes that Blanco High School students will see this school year will be a new face at the helm.
Patrick Hinson, who has been in education for 18 years, is ready to get started, even with COVID-19 and its myriad of unknowns lurking in the background.
His first day on the job was July 6.

A county-wide burn ban has been put in place for Blanco County.
The county commissioners enacted the ban at Tuesday’s meeting. The ban is set to last through Sept. 8, unless extended or rescinded before that time.
Portions of Blanco County are listed as abnormally dry, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Blanco County lags behind the statewide average for self-response rate for the 2020 Census.
The response rate in the county was 45.7 percent through July 12, far behind the statewide rate of 56.9 percent, according to numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Dorothy Benham celebrated her birthday on Sunday, in COVID-19 style. A car parade was held in her honor after the Sunday service at First Baptist Church. She was serenaded by members of the church choir. Dorothy was born July 13, 1922 in Doyle, in McCulloch County. The Blanco Commissioners Court was called to order at 9:02 a.m. by Judge Brett Bray on July 14.
