At its Annual Board meeting on February 20th, the Hochheim Prairie Branch 160 approved donations to several local charities. Hochheim Prairie Insurance is a farm mutual insurance company serving Texans since 1892. Local “branches” receive funds from Hochheim each year based on member’s dues and able to put those funds to work in the communities. The local Hochheim Branch now includes Mason and Brady.
Blue Mountain Peak Ranch was once in a state of disrepair; its poor range health was a result of overgrazing. The land was heavily dominated by blueberry juniper. When it was purchased by Richard Taylor and his late-wife Sally in 2001, it was their dream to rehabilitate the land to what it was before European settlement–more live oak savannah grassland in the uplands, and a higher density of woody plants restricted mainly to the draws.
The Texas Tennis Coaches Association has sponsored team tennis for 3A and Under 36 years ago. On Saturday, Mason has qualified for its 35 trip to the state championships to be held in Austin this coming Friday and Saturday. Mason has won 23 state championships, second on 7 occasions, 3rd three times 7th once (consolation champion) and failed to qualify only once in 2001.
The Mason County Chamber of Commerce is starting a series of quarterly luncheon meetings for the Mason community. The premier session is scheduled for Thursday, March 9, 11:30 a.m. at the Richard P. Eckert Civic Center. A catered lunch will be served for a $10 admission. Please RSVP to the Chamber office by Wednesday, March 8, at 325-347-5758. The Seaquist House, located at 405 Broad St. in Mason, TX will hold its first public tour of 2017 this coming Saturday, March 4th. There have been a few changes made since last year. The tour hours are now 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. and the tours will run every half hour.
The annual Book and Bake Sale is the primary fundraiser for the Friends of the Library. We need your book donations as soon as possible. Book donations can be dropped off at the library. If you have books to donate, please pack them in cardboard boxes. Use separate boxes for fiction and nonfiction, if possible. An extended special preview opportunity and sale for members of the Friends of the Library will be held on Friday, March 31 from 2 p.m.
   The Mason CX Team won the district title last week. Teams competing were: Ethan Powell & Kate Gillespie, Cason Dudney & Jenna Johnson, Raegan Palacio & Joshua Fluhmann and Grace Chapman & Jackson Chapman.    This year’s Resolution: “The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic and/or diplomatic engagement with the People’s Republic of China.” was effectively debated amongst the 4 teams.

The members and spouses of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Auxiliary will have their annual Valentine Party February 14 at Nacho's Cafe in Mason at 6:30 PM. The charge for dinner is $ 5 per person with each ordering from the menu with the VFW paying the balance and gratuity for the event. We will make announcement of our new quarters and take suggestions for the next fund raiser for the VFW.
YOUR local Livestock & Wildlife Protection Association is working hard for Mason County residents. According to Curtis Schulze, treasurer, the association paid bounties on 388 coyotes and 54 bobcats in 2016. A record number of coyotes and bobcats have already been turned in for 2017. As you can see, the work of the Association is paying off for ranchers, landowners, and residents of Mason.
