The Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department will buy 20 new handheld, two-way radios with a $23,169 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Pedernales Electric Cooperative.
Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Roy Burdett said the department has long needed the radios, but their price put them out of reach.
“We just didn’t have money for the new communication systems the federal government requires emergency responders to have,” Burdett said.
No one was injured after the bucket of a hydraulic crane came in contact with power lines outside the Pedernales Electric Cooperative headquarters on Thursday, January 19.
That morning, contracted workers were removing Christmas lights around PEC headquarters on South Avenue F when the crane, also known as a cherry picker, reportedly touched power lines.
Brief power outages were reported across Johnson City as a result of the incident.

Suspect in the January 7 attack on a Blanco County man, Richard Caster of Plano, Texas, was arrested the morning of January 19,2017 by the Frisco, Texas Police Department.
28 year old Caster is a suspect in a brutal attack on a resident on Cripple Creek lane outside of Blanco on January 7, 2017.

The Hill Country Astronomers (HCA) will meet at 6:30 PM, Monday, February 6, at Hill Country University Center in Fredericksburg.

Hill Country Memorial announces the 2017 schedule for its Cardiac Support Group for anyone interested in heart health, including those affected by heart issues like congestive heart failure, heart disease or heart attack.
The Cardiac Support Group will meet on Thurs., Feb. 2 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Hill Country Memorial Learning Center.
Tuesday night the Lady Eagles traveled to Lago Vista to face the Lady Vikings, which are sitting on top of the district at this point.
The Lady Eagles showed signs of how good they can be in the first half, playing with the district leaders. The Lady Eagles came out and played an awesome first quarter and only trailed the Lady Vikings by 6, 10-16.
The Lady Vikings heated up in the second quarter matching their first quarter score plus one.
Thirty-two people celebrated Christmas/New Year’s at the Pecan Street Brewery on December 29. The group included members of the classes of 1959,1960 and 1961.
These folks also celebrate with monthly luncheons held on the last Tuesday of every month.
