Local youth Jarret Worrell recently had an impressive showing competing in the Texas Jr. Hereford State Show in Belton, Texas. This is the largest state junior breed show in Texas, with this year’s show hosting over 600 entries and 419 exhibitors. Jarret exhibited numerous animals and was awarded banners for Grand Champion Female, Reserve Grand Champion Bull, and Reserve Grand Champion Cow/Calf pair.
As Mason’s new Building Inspector, Ross Spallone, explained recently; “It’s a long way to Texas. Eight hours by air and twenty or so hours by car.” But once the decision was made; Texas was the destination for the Spallones anyway. The Spallones, Ross and Cindy, decided to make the move once their daughter, Amy and son-in-law Keith – an Infectious Disease physician and a Pathologist, were committed to work at M.D.
Mason County citizens have been relieved to see the removal of the barriers on the south side of the courthouse in the last few weeks; but, they still have many questions about the project: What is the work schedule? When will the courthouse be completed? How much money will need to be raised to complete the project? On June 8 the Mason Lions Club met at Nachos for their weekly meeting. Any ladies or gentlemen who are interested in joining the Mason Lions Club and serving the Mason community need only ask any Mason Lion! It seems like just yesterday that Mason High School’s class of 2021 received their diplomas and charged into the next phase of their lives, but the district already is planning for next school year amid all the uncertainty that the coronavirus brings. “I think our students really rose to the challenge and have been working hard academically throughout the year,” said Stan Whittle, Mason Independent School District superintendent.
“Hear my voice rise across the desert, my heartbeat echo for miles afar. Across the mountains and upon the sturdy shoulders of the Bighorn Sheep who carry me upwards, into their secret places. I am here.” This past August 2020; a young pioneer of conservation was lost not only to his beloved family, but to his community and to the world of preservation in Texas.
It's been said that we stand on the shoulders of those who went before us and we enjoy our freedoms because of those who fought to defend them. But let us never forget those valiant defenders of our rights who paid the ultimate price by giving their lives to defend our country.
With the conclusion of the 2021 UIL State Speech Meet last week, the Mason High School UIL Academics team completed one of its best ever seasons. The team placed 2nd overall in class 2A by earning 168 total points in state contests, just behind Sabine Pass High School’s 186 points.
Rebuilding Mason County’s historic courthouse will cost an amount of money that could only be described as monumental, but the county leaped forward when the state legislature recently allotted millions of dollars for the rebuilding project. Evelyn Jane Dalton, pivotal member in the development of the new Mason County Farmer’s Market 2021, is one busy lady. An entrepreneurial spirit lends itself to not only the market; but to her own business; Calamity Jane’s Farm where she creates hand made goat’s milk soaps. Partnering with Candace Morrison of the Junction Farmer’s Market, they have garnered participation from local advocates to see the Mason version of the market go from an idea to a live event.
