Mason City Commissioners passed a $6.4 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year while adopting a residential and business property tax rate that is lower than fiscal year 2021. The property tax rate for fiscal year 2022 will be .156 cents per $100 valuation, according to an amended version of Resolution 21-364.

Mason County, like surrounding areas, is in the middle of a COVID-19 surge, according to a county health official this week. At the same time, state data show that vaccination rates in Mason County lag behind state averages. “We’re seeing lots of cases coming in,” said Dr. Monte Horne, Mason County Health Authority and Frontera Mason Clinic physician, on Monday.
An item concerning alcohol beverage fees on the agenda drew many local winery and restaurant owners to Monday’s Mason County Commissioners Court meeting. Their concerns over a possible county-imposed fee were alleviated, but they expressed frustration with increasing fees charged by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC). The agenda item called for a possible county-imposed fee based on the fees required by the state, which increased on September 1, 2021.
Dogs and horses are not allowed on the city’s nature trail. It will remain that way for the foreseeable future, an official said on Tuesday. The rule came up for discussion at the City of Mason Commissioners’ meeting on Aug. 16, but commissioners did not act on the agenda item because the regulation is made at the discretion of the city administrator.

An old proverb states, “Don’t change horses in midstream”. The Edmiston family, proprietors Bronco Sue Custom Hats, did just that. They left their life in Georgetown, Texas, for Mason County to bring up their daughter in the ranching tradition established by Chip Edmiston’s family in the 1890s. Raised in Katemcy and Lampasas respectively, Chip and Tracy lived in Georgetown where Chip was involved in real estate and Tracy taught school in Liberty Hill.
The Mason County Queen’s Court took home two more ribbons this August! Round Up Queen O’Brien Underwood, Duchess Esme Lugo, and Duchess Eliza Cope won first place in Johnson City and second place in Fredericksburg riding on the Chamber of Commerce float.
