More than 800 people--about 20 percent of Mason County’s population--are on the waiting list to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The county judge’s office has been fielding around 100 calls per day from folks clamoring to get vaccinated, but the precious vials remain in short supply. “I’ve had elderly people call up here and they’re nearly in tears,” said Mason County Judge Jerry Bearden.

The year 2020 has affected us all in many ways, and we are all looking forward to a better 2021. Fund raising opportunities have been virtually non-existent and most non for profits are needing a bit of help. Crosby Cemetery has been without a proper sign for over six years and the Crosby Cemetery Association is in the process of having a nice sign erected.
Members of Mason Study Club presented the library with the proceeds from our last two fundraisers which included the bake sale held during the October Arts on the Square and our annual November Chili off/on the Square. The librarians will use these funds for the needs of the library. Items such as replacement books, subscriptions and computer upgrades are just a few of those needs. The 2021 Hereford Herdsman of the Year will be announced at the Cattlemen’s Congress stock show on Sunday, Jan. 10. The winner will be recognized prior to the selection of the supreme champion Hereford. A link to vote for the 2021 Herdsman will be emailed to exhibitors at the email address submitted with their original entries to the Cattlemen’s Congress.
It’s a great time to be a member of the Mason County Farm Bureau, and the organization welcomes new members to add strength to its numbers and influence, according to its president. “We pride ourselves in being the voice of Texas agriculture, but you don’t have to be a farmer or rancher to be a member of the Mason County Farm Bureau.
The Mason County Courthouse will be closed December 21-25, 2020 in order to accommodate the move to the new Annex and to celebrate Christmas. Courthouse offices – Judge, Treasurer, Justice of the Peace, and Clerk - are scheduled to reopen in the new Annex (205 Westmoreland St.) on Monday, December 28, 2020. District Judge’s Office will be located at Mason Bank on the second floor.
There is a fierce group of women in Mason who know how get things done and have a heart for helping others. Last year, they held an event at Restored Rocks called “Give and Gather” to raise awareness of the Mason Food Bank and collect non-perishable goods. The event was so successful that an extended-bed pick-up truck was filled to overflowing with canned goods for our local community. Hill Country Memorial recently delivered 83 bicycle helmets to Mason Elementary and Junior High Schools. The helmets are a gift from HCM as part of their sponsorship support of Ian’s Foundation. Ian’s Foundation was founded in memory of Ian Christopher Fincke, son of HCMMG physician Christopher Fincke, M.D., Gastroenterologist, and wife, Stephanie Fincke, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 16 from a traumatic brain injury sustained during a skateboarding accident.
