The Junior High and JV games with Hawley had to be canceled due to heavy rain in their area; but, the Hawley varsity showed up in Mason Friday night and, for the first half, gave the Punchers a slippery run for their money! The wet field at the Puncherdome made it difficult for both teams, and it would be halfway through the first quarter before the Punchers ended a long drive down the field for a 4-yard touchdown run by Jake Cockerham.
This year’s Fall Range Supper has been set for Thursday, October 19 at the Waltisperger Ranch. The late afternoon event is sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service Mason County and NRCS. The ranch is 22 miles South on Hwy 87. The ranch entrance is on the east side of Hwy 87. This year’s program will include: A Live Brush Control Demonstration at 4:00 followed by a brief history of the ranch by Douglas Waltisperger.
Well, the time has finally arrived for the Old Yeller Day celebration which will be held this Saturday, September 30th from 9:30-1:00 on the Mason County Courthouse Lawn. Friday night, the Mason Punchers racked up their fourth win of 2017 season, and avenging a close defeat to the Iraan Braves in 2016 by winning the game 58-7. Though Mason's offense was putting the points on the scoreboard, the defense is the standout story of the night. Rather than relying on fourth down conversions by Iraan, Mason's defense forced turnover after turnover.
The Punchers continued their 2017 streak last Friday, racking up a big 47-6 win over the Comfort Bobcats down in Kendal County. The first score of the night didn't occur until half way through the first quarter. After a prolonged Puncher drive, Jake Cockerham made the final 6-yard carry for the Mason team.
Runners from across the state will head to Mason, Texas on Saturday, September 30, 2017 for the 11th Annual Gem of the Hill Country 5K & 10K Run/Walk, sponsored by Permian FracsSand. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. in front of the M. Bevin Eckert Library just south of the town Courthouse and Square. The 5K & 10K courses meander through the charming and historic neighborhoods of Mason, featuring hills, valleys, and some of the most scenic views in the Texas Hill Country.
The 67th Llano River Valley German Hymn Fest will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Mason beginning at 3:00 p.m. In 1951, Rev. W.R. Birkner & Hugo Schulze decided to celebrate the singing of hymns in German to the glory of God, and to express appreciation for the Christian faith of early German settlers, and to preserve the inspiration of God’s word as expressed through the German language.
It’s time once again to map the future of agriculture in Mason County for the coming year. Mason County Farm Bureau (CFB) will host their annual meeting at 6:00 PM, October 3, 2017. “Our county convention, or annual meeting, is an excellent opportunity for members to meet one another, discuss issues we face and chart the future of our county Farm Bureau for the upcoming year,” Shannon Worrell, Mason CFB president, said. Using the mantra “Off the field, we are on the same team,” MHS student organizations are joining forces to raise funds for the students of Refugio impacted by hurricane Harvey. MHS students recently became aware of the degree of devastation in Refugio. There are students left homeless by the storm who are actually living at the high school and their needs are great.
