I’m a Tony Romo fan. I like to watch him play and succeed, which means the Cowboys succeed. But, if Jerry Jones and/or Jason Garrett give me a ring — and I recognize the number — I’m going to tell them Dak Prescott should keep his job as starting quarterback. Let’s say Romo comes back from his injury in three weeks. If Prescott, the rookie QB from Mississippi State who is 4-1 as a pro, does well in the next two game ...
There were positives — not many for sure — but a couple. Navarro was, is, and will be a power, so, whereas a 42-0 loss sounds bad, and it was, the Panthers (7-0) are beating everyone like that. They are ranked second in the state, Class-4A, Division II, and must be referred to as perennials, as difficult to take on as Jack Reacher. Positive #2: the Jackets’ first half was admirable, trailing just 14-0.
Fine wine ages well, and that’s what the Llano High volleyball team is doing — but it’s not taking years; it’s taking days to put into a daze most of its 19-4A opponents. The latest to fall was highly regarded Salado, three games to one, October 4. The Jackets are a heady 5-2 in district — three of the wins, including the just-mentioned triumph, have arrived after trailing, 1-0. “These girls can react well to being dow ...
LAMPASAS — The previews make it look like the full-length feature is going to be a good one. The run-through — literally — wasn’t Off Broadway, but it was off 281. It was the Pre-District Cross Country Relays. The Badger campus and course provided the scene, October 6, and 19-4A contestants will make the same road trip — to open the postseason — October 15. The Llano High girls were second among 16 schools, w ...
The Llano Youth Football and Cheer teams played host to the always tough Mason Punchers this past weekend with the 3rd/4th Grade Junior Varsity Jackets suffering their first division loss of the season while the 5th/6th Grade Varsity Jackets recorded their fifth win of the season. The Junior Varsity Jackets now hold a 4-2 record while the Varsity Jackets upped their record to 5-1 with two games left in the regular season. For the first time this season, the two Llano teams will play at differen ...
The Llano Yellowjacket Freshmen combined with a few members of the JV team to take on the Austin Eastside sub-varsity team at Austin’s Nelson Field. After a close first half, the Llano Freshmen opened things up in the second half to come home with the easy victory. The Freshmen team now opens district play as they take on the Navarro Panthers this Thursday at Jacket Stadium at 7 p.m.
Kendall Wenzel makes a nice block in the Junior Varsity Lady Jacket volleyball win over Taylor on Friday.
COMFORT — A couple of Llano youngsters, used to being placed at the end of the line, because of the choice — a few years ago — of the spelling of their last names, shook off that minor problem and had superb performances at the Octoberfest Cross Country Meet here on the opening day of—what else? — October. Meredith Zyetz and Andy Wright were a lot closer to the front of the pack than the Z and W are to theirs — or  ...
The principal did push-ups. The Llano student section, led by five boys — naked except for shorts and white, orange, and black paint — was making so much noise you’d have thought it was a packed house. The team and coach saluted the crowd at game’s end. Oh, another 3-0 sweep, against Taylor, on the last night of September. Such is the happy state of LHS volleyball — the new in-sport — where the Ladies are 4-2 in 19-4A and tied ...
Craig Slaughter will coach another couple of decades or so. He will be involved in playoff games, maybe a state championship. But no matter the strategy he employs; the decisions he makes on third down; the play-call in the last two minutes of a 20-20 game — he will never do a better job on a gridiron than he did September 29 at Nelson Field in Austin. That’s because, against Eastside Memorial, his conscience, not his playbook ...
