HORSESHOE BAY — He wasn’t a quarterback till his senior year at Purcell High School in Cincinnati. What if...? Well, you know where this is leading. A coach at Purcell went up to defensive back/wide receiver Roger Staubach and said, “We want you to compete for the quarterback job. The other guys listen to you, and I saw you had a strong arm in baseball.” The Horseshoe Bay Sports Club, with a packed crowd — with which Staubach is familiar — heard Cowboys’ stories and more, Septembe ...
It was the best of times and the worst of times as the Llano Youth Football and Cheer teams headed to Blanco to take on the Panthers. In the first game of the morning, the Jacket third and fourth Grade Junior Varsity team continued their gritty play as they beat the Panthers 8-6 in a hard fought contest to remain undefeated on the season.
The Llano Junior High teams had a full slate of games for the first time as each of the teams had games at Jacket Stadium. The seventh grade teams each fall to Lago Vista, but the eighth grade teams each won. The eighth grade A team topped Lago Vista, while the B team defeated Fredericksburg B. The Jackets now battle the Burnet Bulldogs this Thursday night with all four games set to be played at Jacket Stadium.
The Llano Yellowjacket Freshman and Junior Varsity teams traveled to Lago Vista to take on the Vikings. The Freshman team suffered their first loss of the season while the Junior Varsity moved their record to 3-1 on the season with an impressive victory. The Jackets now travel to Burnet to take on the rival Bulldogs this Thursday evening.
Back to the drawing board? You wonder if any board would take the assignment. The Llano football Jackets, with such promise a few weeks ago — a better than average group with an attractive schedule, a coaching staff and players with high energy and hope, the potential for a seven-or-eight-win season — have sunk into quicksand disguised as a gridiron. It may not be the bottom — yet — but, for now, there’s dark at the end of the tunnel. 41-13.
Whether it’s Oklahoma vs. Texas, Harvard meets Yale, Westlake against Lake Travis, or Superman taking on Kryptonite U, there’s not a much better match in sports than a rivalry. Friday, September 23, Llano welcomes Burnet for the 77th renewal — and resumption — of that “Journey down Highway 29.” The Jackets lead, 39-36, with one tie.  The teams last met in 2013, and the Bulldogs enter with an 11-game winning s ...
Call it a smashing success. Lampasas is not a serious rival to a Liberty Hill or Wimberley, but we’re not discussing strength of schedule here, we’re talking about the game of the moment, the hand we’re dealt. The volleyball Jackets ripped the visitors in three straight. It seemed like an awfully quick contest in late afternoon, almost like the girls had to get to a Homecoming ceremony or something. “Did a great job,” said&nb ...
The 2016 Hall of Fame team: 1979 girls’ golf, fifth in the state. L-R: Head coach Tom Thornton, Lisa Watkins Miiller, Karla Thiers Justis, and Jo Hayhurst Reed. Not pictured are Deborah Renick and Cindy Burke of the golf team and other hall recipents: Kirk Hodges and Dr. Thayne Short, both honored posthumously, and Mary Fay Richardson-Wallace who was pictured last week.
The Llano Youth Football and Cheer teams hosted the Brady Bulldogs this past Saturday at Jacket Stadium. Both teams played great football on the day and came out victorious as the Jacket JV won 14-6 while the Llano Varsity spanked the Bulldogs 40-0. The victories keep both Jacket teams tied for first place in the Hill Country Youth Football League standings for their respective divisions as the JV is tied with the undefeated Mason Punchers while the Varsity is tied with the undefeated Blanco Pa ...
Somewhere former longtime Llano Jr. High School football coach James Saucier probably has a big smile on his face as the Llano Junior High Daubers started out their seasons with a bang as the seventh and eighth grade teams each recorded shutout victories over the rival Brady Bulldogs. Both the Dauber seventh and eighth grade teams played with combined A and B teams with the seventh grade scoring early and often in a 34-0 victory while the eighth graders protected the home turf of Jacket Stadium ...
