Hill Country Memorial will officially join the Llano community with the opening of its immediate care clinic on Monday. The clinic, at 1310 Ford Street, will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. “Hill Country Memorial and the HCM Medical Group are excited to serve in the Llano community,” said Clint Kotal, HCM Medical Group Chief Operating Officer.
It is an annual event that brings the entire community and beyond together, for three days of showing, and a year of preparation. The Llano County Junior Livestock Show and Art, Craft, and Food Show was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the John L Kuykendall Event Center and Arena. Kids, parents, grandparents, friends and family are together for these three days, working together to be the best they can be.
Two legends of country music, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn, have wowed audiences for years -- Twitty, before his death, and Lynn, still active today. On Saturday, for two performances at the Lantex Theater, their grandchildren, Tre and Tayla, entertained Llano Country Opry audiences with powerful performances of their respective hits. Lynn began the show with a number of Loretta’s songs, and her energetic singing mixed with non-stop narrative was a hit with those enjoying the show.
Commissioners reinstate burn ban
The Llano County commissioners approved a request from the Lake Buchanan Conservation Corporation to build a pavilion at Llano County Park and reinstated the county-wide burn ban at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. The commissioners voted unanimously to allow Lake Buchanan Conservation Corporation to build a 30-foot by 50-foot pavilion at Llano County Park on Lake Buchanan. LBCC will pay for the cost, which Ron Abshier of LBCC estimates will be $25-30,000.
Statewide and regional candidates faced the public at a Llano County Tea Party forum held last Thursday at the American Legion Hall. Candidates or surrogates for several offices, including agriculture commissioner, land commissioner, railroad commissioner and U.S. Congress, made their pitch to voters and answered questions in front of a near-packed audience. The biggest fireworks came from two candidates who took common aim at the incumbent.
A Llano resident died last week after a medical incident in the Llano County Jail. A press release from the Llano County Sheriff’s Office said Cindy Lou Yonker, 56, suffered a medical condition while in the county jail at 8:36 a.m. on Dec. 25, 2017. Baylor Scott & White EMS responded and Yonker was transported by Air EVAC to Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin for treatment. Yonker died Jan.
Saturday was a night of firsts for Llano and the Lantex Theater as recording artist and local fan favorite, Jake Hooker performed for the first time in this venue. It was also a first in the fact that Jake promoted the show himself, it is usually brought by a third party, like the Llano Country Opry is brought to Llano by Heart of Texas Country Music Association in Brady.
January is School Board Recognition Month and Llano ISD is joining other districts across the state to thank these local leaders for their dedication and willingness to serve as advocates for our children and public schools. School board members serve countless hours working to make public education the best it can be for every child.
Frigid winter weather greeted Llano County as 2018 began. The high for New Year’s Day was 32 degrees Fahrenheit in Llano, which was 5 degrees below the low on the same day one year ago. The high was 58 and the low was 37 as 2017 greeted Llano, compared to 32 and 23 this year. Though it was cold Monday, the low of 23 was not a record for that day.
The Llano Chamber of Commerce will hold its 94th annual Community Awards Banquet on Jan. 30, 2018. Things begin at 5:30 p.m. with a meet and greet, followed by an Italian meal at 6:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held at 7:20 p.m. One change this year is a new award to recognize businesses.
