Culminating a semester spent creating LBJ High Art students swept the top honors at the San Antonio Rodeo Western Art Student Competition last Friday. JC students placed in every division in the annual statewide event held in conjunction with the San Antonio Rodeo. Maura Ibanez took top honors with her Championship Sculpture winning an $8,000.00 scholarship and an opportunity to have her work displayed at the Briscoe Museum of Western Art in San Antonio.
This is a fish story…about a fish named Michael…and how he came to live in Johnson City. It begins with a man named Michael, age 49, who lives at Down Home Ranch in Elgin, over on the other side of Austin. Michael’s pride and joy was his tank of tropical fish.
The LBJHS Varsity Boys made the most of the quick turn-around between the UIL State Football Playoffs and the start of the 2020-21 Basketball season by outgunning the Ingram Warriors 48-25. Mason Roberts led the Eagles’ balanced scoring attack with 12 points; Jakub Emerson, Blake Jenkins and Brinley Portie added 8 each, Colin Linsey 6 and Nate Axtell 4.
The young Lady Eagle Varsity battled to the final buzzer in one victory and three losses as they opened the 2020-21basketball season. Karena Calderon led all scorers with 11 points in the 30-27 victory against Medina. Eight of the ten players suited up for JC scored and key defensive stops in the final minute helped secure the victory.
Johnson City teen partners with Lyme Warrior foundation for final challenge
By Marty Garcia 16-year-old Johnson City teen Maura Ibanez will be lacing up her shoes on Saturday for the final challenge of her journey raising money and awareness about Lyme disease. Ibanez was diagnosed with the disease two years ago, which affects over 400,000 people a year. Expensive medical bills and debilitating symptoms make this disease especially hard to bear. Battling to the final point the Johnson City Lady Eagles lost a five-set heartbreaker to the Thrall Lady Tigers in a UIL Region IV-2A semifinal match last Tuesday at Cedar Park High School. The loss ended a streak of wins that included thirteen consecutive three-set romps against 2A opponents. The Eagle Varsity Football season came to a close Thursday night with a 55-14 loss to Ganado in the Bi-District round of the UIL 2A Division Playoffs. The Indians allowed only 60 yards rushing so with the ground attack shut down the Eagles took to the air. Quarterback Cade Boyer completed 11 of 31 passing attempts for 203 yards.
