Grandparent’s Day was first recognized in 1973 when Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, Virginia made it her mission to educate youth about the contributions seniors made through out history. First petitioning the state and eventually the nation in 1977 when it was made a national holiday. Blanco Elementary will be celebrating grandparent’s day on Friday, September 7th with an invitation for grandparents to visit their “Babe-Bee’s” classroom for tea and cookies and a Bee themed celebratio ...

The inaugural El Rey 5K and Dog Walk was held at the Old Blanco County Courthouse on Saturday, Sept. 1. The event honored the memory of Ian Ray, “El Rey,” who was a dog lover. Competitive 5K runners, joggers and walkers enjoyed the route that began at the courthouse, turned east on Main St., south through the Blanco State Park along the banks of the Blanco River, and back to the courthouse. More than 130 people registered and participated in the event.

Blanco hosted a football scrimmage against the Mason Punchers on Thursday, August 23. According to Dave Campbell’s 2018 Texas Football magazine, Blanco is predicted to finish 2nd in District 13-3A Division II. Sonora is picked to finish 1st and Johnson City is predicted to finish 3rd. Other teams in District 13-3A Division II are Comfort, Brady, and Ingram.
Looking for free family-friendly event to attend here in Blanco? You won’t want to miss the Second Annual Safe and Drug Free Wellness Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12. The Blanco Coalition on Awareness, Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse (CoAPT) is hosting the fair in the Blanco High School cafeteria.
The Blanco Lady Panther volleyball team defeated the Geneva School of Boerne 3-0 in a home game on Monday, August 20 and then won 2nd place in the St. Mary’s Hall Tournament in San Antonio in games played on Thursday, August 23 and Saturday, August 25. The Panthers posted a 4-2 record in the tournament. On Monday Blanco beat Geneva 25-12, 25-15, and 25-20.
Blanco High School is named as one of the nation’s best high schools according to U.S. News and World Report for the second year in a row. Data gathered from more than 22,000 public high schools from all fifty states and the District of Columbia; Blanco High School ranked as the 244th best school in the state of Texas and nationally recognized with the bronze medal. Blanco Elementary opened its pre-kindergarten program to tuition-paying students for the 2018-19 school year. Children who are four years old on or before Sept. 1 of the current school year and who do not qualify for either the Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) or the state-mandated pre-kindergarten program provided for qualifying students, are eligible to enroll. The Blanco ISD’s Board of Trustees met in an early meeting on Monday, July 23, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. for some quick business. Omitting the Superintendent’s report for the day the meeting moved along to agenda items. First on the agenda was the approval to increase school lunch prices. The Texas Department of Agriculture requires schools to review meal prices annually.
