Twin Sisters gained some additional notoriety last week when it was part of a Texas dance hall tour that featured country music artist Asleep at the Wheel. The tour group gathered in San Antonio last Monday, and its first stop on Tuesday was Blanco and Twin Sisters Dance Hall. There, a full day of activities got underway at 10:30 a.m.
The administrative team of the Blanco Independent School District is recommending to the board of education that 15½ staff positions be looked at for possible cuts for the 2017-18 academic year. The school board conducted a special meeting on Monday night in the elementary school cafeteria, and BISD Business Manager Matthew Streger outlined a plan that could save the district $766,000 to offset the expected loss of about $700,000 in Additional State Aid for Tax Reduction funding. The Blanco Police Department issued 2,230 citations in 2016, which represents a 229 percent increase from the year before, statistics showed. Officers also issued 2,820 violation warnings last year, a 160 percent increase from 2015. Blanco’s Riverside Bar is nothing but a shell after a three-alarm fire gutted the inside of the building and its contents on Thursday morning. Blanco Volunteer Fire Department personnel initially were dispatched to the bar, 18 Main St., at 9:11 a.m. on Dec. 29 and found heavy smoke coming from the east side of the building, which houses the bar and kitchen area inside. There was little doubt as to whom Blanco County wanted as its next president of the United States as almost three out of every voters cast ballots for Donald Trump in the Tuesday, Nov. 8, general election. The county clerk’s office released its voter totals last week after ballots were counted. Trump, the Republican Party’s nominee, will become the 45th president in January after he defeated Democrat Party nominee Hillary Clinton.
When it comes to financial integrity, the Blanco Independent School District is superior. That was the finding of the Texas Education Agency as it evaluated local data from the 2014-15 academic year. “The headline out there is that our rating is superior,” BISD Business Manager Matt Streger told board of education members during their November meeting. To give it some “peace of mind,” the Blanco Independent School District Board of Education last month approved a $2.5 million line of credit with Blanco National Bank. The approval came in the form of a resolution. The line of credit only will be used if needed throughout the year.
