The boys' basketball officially began their season with the Menard tournament where the boys beat the Eden Bulldogs and then lost to Leakey and Menard.
The Punchers then went on the road and played a tough Christoval Cougar team that returned all but one player off a team that went deep in the playoffs last year.
The boys then faced a scrappy Llano Yellowjacket team here in Mason and after exchanging the lead several times, the Punchers would prevail in the fourth quarter.

Over the course of three days of UIL Academic competition in Mason (December 2,7) and Center Point on December 8, 2016, Mason Junior High students amassed many individual and team medals. After all points were totalled, San Saba place first, Mason second and Junction third. Teachers are extremely proud of these students for carving out time to attend practices during lunch, before-school (7th & 8th grades) and after-school(6th grade).
The Veterans of Foreign Wars National Headquarters annually sponsor an essay writing contest designed for the elementary student titled “The Patriot’s Pen” and the theme was “The America I Believe In” and high school students essay title was “The Voice of Democracy” with the theme being “My Responsibility to America”.
The 2016 Puncher football season came to a close on Friday night in San Marcos. The Refugio Bobcats, a perennial rival, will move on ahead to the semifinals while the Punchers move on with their other activities.
The Punchers did not make it an easy win for Refugio. Mason had 158 yards for the night to Refugio's 300.

Mason took the regional championship on Friday night by defeating the Normangee Panthers, 55-18, in a game played at the Pflugerville Stadium.
The Punchers took the ball on the opening kickoff (and an odd onside kick attempt by Normangee), and on the second play of the game, Haddon Hudson put the first points on the board with a 42-yard touchdown.
