HORSESHOE BAY—Phil Dawson, who has been a field goal kicker in three different decades—college and NFL—did a superb job of stitching life’s lessons inside a pro football career, March 2, at the Horseshoe Bay Sports Club.
Candor was abundant, as the former Longhorn (mid-to-late 1990s) indicated not every NFL player hums the Nationwide tune.
“There’s a lot of insecurity,” said the 41-year-old Dawson, who recently re-signed for a fourth year in San Francisco.
This school year the staff at Packsaddle Elementary has been reading The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon. SAN SABA—The Jackets were again superb—and the girls did well, too, in a nearby story—in the Armadillo Track & Field Meet, March 3, at Mill Pond Park.
The boys’ medal collection probably out-weighed a bag-full of discs and puts and maybe a javelin or two, if such an instrument were present at Texas track gatherings.
“It’s nice to get wins,” said head coach Craig Slaughter, but, “our goal is to get more seconds, thirds, and fourths {for points},” in the events.
SAN SABA—Kaymon Lange made it two triumphant Thursdays in a row, March 3, with a first in the triple jump and a second in the long jump. Not too much to get upset about in the silver lining as her 16 foot, 7-and-a-half inch effort is now her personal record.
Her 33 foot, two-and-a-half in the triple is not a PR, but it did beat all comers in the Armadillo Meet.
“Kaymon gets after it,” said assistant coach, Zach Duncan.
JOHNSON CITY—The visit here for a tournament, March 4-5, turned out better than the opening game on the new diamond—more on that later.
The softball Jackets played the host school in the opener and lost 8-5. Sydney Hicks drove in two runs with a single, and Kendall Wenzel stroked a two-run homer.
Catcher Kamri Thompson threw out a runner going to third and another one attempting to steal second.
A no-hitter is a rarity, okay? Seven in the major leagues in close to 2,500 games in 2015. A triple play was even more shy: twice it happened in ’15. What are the odds for BOTH in the SAME DAY by the SAME team? 100,000-to-one? And Llano is that team!
Isn’t Hill Country Classic a proper name for the tournament, where the Jackets authored a pair of classics, Thursday, March 3.

The Punchers finished their 2016 Basketball season with a loss to the #9 ranked Schulenburg Shorthorns but not without a fight. Mason showed no intimidation to the size and athleticism that the Shorthorns possessed by jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead playing great defense and shooting the ball extremely well.
