You see the Salado girls all in a bunch—smiling but not overly exuberant—and you see three Llano players marching in single file to the bench—separated by 10 feet or so—down in hope and heart but showing a true competitor’s defiance that the first district game, in which you never trailed for close to 30 minutes, had, almost unbelievably, slipped out of your grasp.
“We played well,” said head coach Jerry McSherry, who showed remarkable calm and dignity following a 40-38 loss.
Several Llano High football players were named to the all-district team. They are:

1997. Clinton (Bill) was president; 21-year-old Tiger Woods captured The Masters by 12 strokes; Titanic won the Oscar as Best Picture of the Year; and “Love Gets Me Every Time,” by Shania Twain, was one of Country’s biggest hits.
And, also 20 years ago, the Llano High football Jackets took their place as one of the all-time great teams in school history.
An NBA schedule was finally put to rest December 11 for the Jacket boys, as they played 10 games in 14 days. Do they need a union? They handled the stretch in respectable fashion, compiling a 4-6 record which included a 47-34 loss at Fredericksburg, December 11.
“Got to have a solid week of practice,” declared head coach Chris Armstrong.
We wrote about the 2-1 mark at the Thrall tournament last week, so we start this journey at home, December 5, a 61-54 victory over Goldthwaite.

Was that dodgeball going on out there? Did I drop into the old-man martial arts class by mistake? Girls just refuse to play like the boys, unless we’re talking about the Red Wings and Maple Leafs.
Yes, the main subject of our discussion is basketball, but on December 8, the (Lady?) Jackets and Hamilton battled to a draw if there had been a ring set up, but the Bulldogs won the main event, 48-24.
This is a condolence card for Liberty Hill High School, as it appears “No promotion” once again for the Panthers. They are forced to continue to toil in Class 4A. 5A says to them: “Not this time my friends and one more rejection means—similar to baseball’s Hall of Fame—you will have to wait to be admitted on the Old Timers’ ballot.”
Here’s the deal: the UIL says the high cutoff for Class 4A is 1,149 students.
Whether you coached a Heisman Trophy Winner as an assistant or a head coach; whether it was in junior high, high school, or college—that is a very big deal, and Llano’s Matt Green and Ryan Priem both had a football role in the career of Baker Mayfield, who claimed the 83rd Heisman Trophy, December 9.
Green, the Jackets’ head coach, helped mentor Mayfield, as the Lake Travis offensive coordinator in three of the glory years: 2008, ’09, and ’10.
