To understand the origin of Father’s Day, we must first go back to the origin of Mother’s Day. If Mother’s Day had not been started, we probably would not have a Father’s Day. After the “War Between the States” (erroneously called the American Civil War), an activist named Ann Reeves Jarvis urged a divided West Virginia town to celebrate “Mother’s Work Days.” That brought together the mothers of Confederate and Union soldiers; however, it would be another 40 plus years befor ...
A father has many definitions: role model, leader, provider, home security, snake exterminator, driving instructor, home… But what truly makes a man into a father is the love he has for his children. Though at times fathers feel like they failed at certain things or didn’t handle a situation properly in hindsight, that’s not what their child remembers.
A child remembers being so nervous before an elementary school play that they franticly scan the crowd until they see a face they know ...
Through the years, I have been designated cook in camps from the wilds of Canada to south of the border. I absolutely love cooking outside and preparing meals that are simple and tasty. This past weekend while filming a cooking segment for my weekly outdoor show, I prepared a Dutch Kettle recipe that I learned years ago from the late Bob Hood who wrote about the outdoors for almost a half-century.
One was one of the greatest players of all time. The other was awfully good, but he’ll be remembered for a mistake, and many fans and media criticized him too much. After all, it is, just a game. His personal comeback off the field was an inspiration for all of us.

He died May 26 at the age of 85.
A fly in fishing trip to a remote lake in northern Saskatchewan is an experience that anyone that loves the outdoors and fishing should consider doing. I believe its lack of information that deters many fishermen from enjoying the fun of catching fish that have never seen a hook and dining on daily shore lunches of fresh walleye fillets is a pristine setting that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
In a couple weeks, I will be heading up to Iskwatikan Lake Lodge for the third con ...
I absolutely love sharing my outdoors lifestyle via this column each week. I must, I’ve been writing it for just over three decades! As an outdoors writer, I find myself continually exposed to folks that are skilled in all sorts of outdoor endeavors and from each I manage to learn something useful that I can share with you.
Just about the time when I think that I ‘know it all’ about a particular subject, along comes someone with a different and often better way of getting it done.
This question has been very present as of late. We as gardeners and small farmers have had a mystery lurking with the death of many plants in the garden to the entire garden. Let's have a look at something that has arrived at my door, which is in the manure and hay: the mainstay for fertilizing and adding carbon structure in our soils.
This is how we prepare our soils for as long as we have been growing by using composted animal manure with a large addition of carbon added for the compostin ...
Recently, Congress voted on a pay raise across the board for federal employees – regardless of their performance – with the Federal Civilian Workforce Pay Raise Fairness Act (H.R. 790). There are hard-working people who work in federal agencies, but it’s hard to believe that every single one of them deserves this raise.
During my three-decade career as an outdoors writer, I have had the opportunity to travel to many places and spend time with some wonderful people. This past week, I enjoyed a turkey hunt up in Palo Pinto County on a ranch that ranks very high on my list. Through the years, I have enjoyed some grand times hunting this ranch situated right on the banks of the Brazos River.
If you read any of the Tiger Woods stories concerning his win at the Masters last month, you probably noticed a mention that he has now won 15 majors. The U.S. and British Opens are majors—or Grand Slam events—along with the PGA Championship and the Masters.
What reporters leave out are Tiger’s three U.S.
