During my high school years, a fellow student gained national attention by cutting his two cars in half and joining the front sections back to back. There was no rear seat in this modified Model A Ford; only two front seats and two steering wheels facing opposite directions. Memory allows me to see again the faces of confused and amused onlookers when the celebrated car surgeon sat at one steering wheel with his brother positioned at the other while driving through town in a parade.
Welcome back to the 2015-2016 school year. I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy their summer. One would think school started in the first week of August with all the activities going on at Llano High school. On that same note, we want to acknowledge the extra time and efforts put forth by all employees and students as they helped prepare for the 2015-2016 year.

Hill Country Memorial has been listed as a “100 Great Hospitals in America” by Becker’s Hospital Reviews, which in January recognized HCM CEO Jayne Pope as one of “50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know.” The current list includes hospitals from around the country.
Becker’s Hospital Reviews’ recognition is yet another indication of the quality of care that HCM provides for its patients and community.
Thursday afternoon saw the season opener for Llano’s Junior Varsity Yellow Jackets against the Wall Hawks in a non-district confrontation. The Hawks won the toss and deferred to the second half with Llano getting the opening kick-off. With second year starter Ben Walling at quarterback and a solid receiving corps led by Ian Fletcher, the JV Jackets are looking forward to a good year.
After a muffed catch to open the game, the Jacket offense took to the field on their own 10 yard, not exactly ...
WALL—It was neighbor vs. neighbor—not the schools, but the coaches. Houston Guy, two years older than Craig Slaughter, was host, as head coach of the Hawks. In the mid-to-late 1980s, they lived across the street from each other and played for the Winters Blizzards. Oh, the Blizz was led by Craig’s dad, Dan.
Guy’s team looked like it could run to Houston and won this match, 28-13.
My son-in-law, John Crabb, a big UT fan, wanted to go to South Bend for the September 5 game, but his folks will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary that night so he won’t go. Good decision, despite my plea that he should make the trip. My rationale was he has already proven himself as a fine son.
I told his wife, and my daughter, Kimberly—I don’t know if that’s how you spell it, because her late mother and I named her Kim—where I stood, and she disagreed, saying, “There will b ...
COMFORT—This Llano High volleyball squad, playing some awfully good teams, suffered more setbacks than victories in August, but it can look plenty good when it does get a win, and they handled Florence, 2-0, in a best-of-three format in the Comfort tournament, August 27.
“We had good stretches followed by ones not so good,” said head coach John Black.
Mason Greenwood, in his first varsity game on the home gridiron, ran for three touchdowns and caught a Wyatt Casey pass for a fourth, September 4, and the Llano Yellow Jackets battered Bangs, 41-12. It was Llano's first home win since the 2013 season.
Casey also contributed an 82-yard run for a score.
The defense was excellent, yielding just one TD when the visitors were on offense.
You can read the whole story, including interviews from players and coaches, in The Llano News, September 9.
