HOT Money for Retrofit Fixtures. Thanks to a lot of hard work done last year, Blanco, Johnson City, and Dripping Springs received legislative authorization to spend a portion of their Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) funds for night sky preservation. This is a special tax paid by visitors who stay in the city’s motels and B&Bs.
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the most common wildflowers in the Hill Country, based on my experience with how often I find those flowers on the properties I visit. Similarly, the following list represents how frequently I have observed these different shrubs and vines on various properties that I have visited in the Hill Country. Agarita (Berberis trifoliolata) is one of the most common shrubs in the Hill Country.

Staff implements new safety measures
The Science Mill has reopened to visitors, carefully following the latest Phase 3​ state guidelines​ for reopening and CDC ​recommendations​ for public health and safety. To space out visitors and allow plenty of room for social distancing, the Science Mill is now open six days a week, with two entry times (10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm) Tuesday through Saturday, and from 12-4pm on Sunday.
COVID-19 cases in Blanco County continue to increase, mirroring trends from across the state of Texas. Numbers released Tuesday by the Blanco County Department of Emergency Management showed the county with 32 active cases of COVID-19 and 59 cases under investigation, along with eight recoveries. FREDERICKSBURG— Signor Vineyards & Joanna’s Market will be hosting a Hot Dog Stand Fundraiser for the 4th of July weekend to benefit the Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department. The vineyard & market will be grilling hot dogs on their sprawling estate and invite guests to stop by to enjoy on the property or pick up to go. Last year’s fundraiser raised $836.
Canyon Bass, 16, has won the title of 2020 Texas High School State Champion Bull Rider and will go on to compete for the National/World title in July. Bass is a sophomore and new resident of Johnson City. At the State Finals, Bass won first in Round 1, second in Round 2, first in the Short Round, first in the Average and took home the high score of the week.
