This past weekend’s celebration of July Fourth was perhaps a bit less “social” than past years, and with the activities of Round-up mostly cancelled for this next weekend the visitors and gatherings are certainly going to be limited. I would hate to guess what the new “rules” will be by the end of this week, but one thing that I do know is that the City will continue to function and work to serve our residents.
Second Lieutenant James Durst graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on Saturday, June 13 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. James was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant within the Engineer branch. He will report to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri for the Basic Officer Leader Course in August, after which he will post to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii for his first assignment. Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” who absolutely insist on enjoying life to the fullest, are living their best lives after about all the “stay home, stay safe” anybody could stand! June’s get-together, at the home of Jan Appleby, was a ton of fun! Highlights were: several new people attending, beautiful weather to sit on the patio, of course fabulous hosting by Jan, and one of Scarlet Punchers’ favorite annual events, the tacky jewelry exchange.

It seems that COVID-19 has risen up to again haunt our state, and with the increasing confirmed cases throughout Texas this pandemic continues to challenge our lives. Locally we are still not seeing the rapid expansion of the disease, but with the new case numbers in our region it is likely only a matter of time before we will have more cases in our own backyard.
The Community Thrift Store is planning to extend our shopping hours in the coming weeks to allow our customers more time to browse and find those special bargains. Starting next Monday, June 29, we will be open for our full hours of 9:00 in the morning till 4:00 in the afternoon.
