Spike Dykes, the winningest Texas Tech football coach in the 20th century, and a person, who “never met a man he didn’t like,” has died at the age of 79. Dykes apparently suffered a heart attack, April 10. He was a resident of Horseshoe Bay.
Spike Dykes was a head coach in high schools and made stops that included Belton, Big Spring, and Alice, and finally, Midland Lee.
Water, a constant concern in the ever-growing population of central Texas, was the big topic Friday in Llano.
Leaders of towns around the area, from Mason, Llano, Bandera, Kerrville and others, participated in a program put together by Hill Country Alliance. It was sponsored locally by the City of Llano, Llano Main Street, the Llano American Legion, Llano Chamber of Commerce and Joe’s Bar and Grill.
Just over a year ago, Deputy Bucky Boswell of the Llano County Sheriff’s Office used a Stop Stick device to stop a driver running from law enforcement at high speeds. He was rewarded for that efficient and safe stop last Wednesday. Boswell was presented with an award for the ‘Hit of the Year’ for 2016 from Stop Stick, a company that manufactures the tire-piercing devices used to make many high speed stops.

Llano ISD could see more green, thanks to the sun. A proposed solar farm on the Llano ISD school land in Tom Green County could net the school district extra funds, said Michael Dennison, a solar development manager for E.ON. Dennison represented the firm, which has 39,000 employees world-wide and is headquartered in Germany, at Monday’s commissioners court meeting.

Track & Field records are supposed to last about as long as a size-2 shoe. 40 years is a tad out of the norm, but that was the Llano High long-jump mark — until March 30. John Keeney flew 21 feet, seven-and-three-quarter inches, at the Jacket Relays, and David Clarno’s 1977 autograph was relegated to second place in school history.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” Keeney told me.
Fourth grade students at Llano Elementary School recently presented the musical program, “The Texans: Birth of the Lone Star State,” to learn about the state. Julie Easley is the music teacher.
