It's that time of year when the best chili on the planet comes to Johnson City. There will be some new twists this year to delight all those who attend. Here in Johnson City, at the Blanco County Fairgrounds along the banks of the Pedernales River, men from Texas and beyond will compete in one of the largest cook offs in the world, to become the Texas Men's State Chili Champion.
On Thursday, March 5th the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce hosted their Old West Casino Nite event at the Blanco County Show Barn. Pecan Street Brewing provided a delicious dinner, Scooter Pearce performed her magic as always, the silent auction was awesome and the Casino Knights provided a great gaming experience as always!
The Johnson City City Council met on March 3, 2015 for their regularly scheduled meeting and all members were present. Police Chief Randy Holland reported that JCPD had handled 133 calls for service, 77 citations, 84 written warnings, 2 traffic accidents, 2 out of city calls, 15 arrests, 10 cases filed with the city attorney, and 5 cases filed with the county attorney. The School Board met on March 2, 2015 with all board members present. The first item on the agenda was a report from the Stadium Construction Committee. Kip Thompson gave a brief report and Mr. Fromberg gave a detailed report on the timeline for construction, costs, and facilities. The stadium costs include a concession stand, restrooms, press box and a new field house.
JCISD School Board February 9 Meeting Recap
By Debbie Burkhard The JCISD School Board met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 9, 2015 with all members present. Joe Summy spoke during Open Forum and stated that there should be some estimates on the cost of the new stadium now. Summy said final costs were not expected but there should be some estimate to provide to the public.
On Feb. 14, Pedernales Electric Cooperative will welcome a new neighbor: The Hill Country Science Mill. This non-profit regional science center is opening in a renovated historical mill just a few blocks from PEC's Johnson City headquarters. The Cooperative has made a contribution in line with the unique cooperative principle of Concern for Community and PEC's long tradition of support of area educational programs. To Open Valentines Day
The new Hill Country Science Mill (HCSM) promises to introduce students to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields using interactive, engaging exhibits and programs. The 14,000 square foot space features 35+ exhibits, sourced globally and many of which are unique to the HCSM. Bonnie Baskin, PhD and the museum's Founder and Chair of the Board, has designed a place where kids can fall in love with science.
Surrounded by friends and family, Brett Bray was sworn in as the new Blanco County Judge on Monday, Jan. 5 in the county courtroom. He took the oath from retiring county judge Bill Guthrie, who is stepping down after decades of public service, first as a justice of the peace, and then as judge. "Judge Guthrie has been kind enough to offer assistance whenever I need it, but I wouldn't mind having him 'right there' for a while, at least at first,"
The 76th Blanco County 4-H and FFA Youth Show begins Thursday, January 15th at the Blanco County Show Barn in Johnson City. This year there are more than 525 entries. These leaders of tomorrow put in many hours, and often times, a lot their hard-earned money working towards a successful project and show.
The City Council met on Jan. 6 for their regularly scheduled meeting. All members were present. JCPD Report was presented by Randy Holland. JCPD had 129 calls for service in December. There were 8 citations, 140 written warnings, 1 traffic accident, 1 out of city call, 18 arrests, 11 cases filed with the City Attorney, 6 cases filed with the County Attorney, 1 case referred to Austin Parole.
