Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB), a statewide grassroots environmental and community improvement non-profit organization, recently named Keep Blanco Beautiful a Silver Star Affiliate, a designation granted to only 17 of KTB’s nearly 300 affiliates. Silver Star recognition is the second-highest status any community affiliate can achieve.
To remain in good standing with KTB, community affiliates must submit a report, pay dues, attend training and participate in a KTB-endorsed activity annually.
The April Blanco Coalition Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment of Substance Abuse (CoAPT) meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. on April 21 by Amber Corder, project coordinator.
The first order of business was to discuss the grant application, which is due May 26. There have been a few changes since the last grant application and these changes were discussed briefly.
The Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky (BCFNS) last week concluded its 2021 Night Sky Art Contest for students at the high schools and middle schools in both Blanco and Johnson City.
The contest, whose theme was “Discover the Night – Deep in the Dark of Texas™,” drew entries from 126 students.

Blanco County continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the Rural Capital Area of Central Texas, according to figures released last week by the Texas Workforce Commission.
The county’s unemployment rate rose slightly from February to March, from 4.0 to 4.1 percent, according to figures released this month by the TWC.
The Blanco City Council meeting was called to order at 6:01 p.m. April 13 by Mayor Pro Tem Martin Sauceda with all council members present.
The governor’s last order removed the mask mandate and removed the ability to enforce mask requirements for cities. Council member Mike Smith moved to extend the mask policy because the county has extended its mandate.

First, the public hearing on the countywide polling place program took place. Kristen Spies, election administrator, took the floor first. She explained that his will allow citizens to vote at any polling location.

You may soon receive an appraisal notice from the Blanco County Appraisal District. The appraisal district mailed about 14,500 appraisal notices on 4/16/21. Your city, county, school district and other local taxing units will use the appraisal district’s value to set your 2021 property taxes.
Under Texas law, county appraisal districts are required to notify property owners about changes in their property’s value.
