They used to say, “You can’t fight City Hall,” but several hundred friends of Joe Buck Simpson decided to try their hand at taking on the Llano ISD and discovered, “By golly, the pen is mightier than the sword.” Facebook, in this case, was the conduit of the pen. Superintendent Casey Callahan, to his credit, indicated, in an email, he was taking responsibility for replacing Joe Buck as the public address announcer for Llano High varsity football games.
DALLAS—This is normally the time when hope springs eternal, as football borrows the phrase from baseball during Spring Training. There may be hope among Texas fans, but eternal, as a companion, must have lost its way to Columbus, Ohio. The Rogue Nation may have had more optimism in its 10-rounder with Ethan Hunt than diehard Horn backers have for their 2015 gridiron edition. The negatives include a contest for quarterback between Tyrone Swoopes, who did not prove himself last year, and Jerrod ...
Dean Sharp, consultant and project manager for the current bond projects presented a Power Point program to the Llano school Board Tuesday night. He featured an aerial14video taken with "Dauber the rone" showing before and after views of the stadium turf and track project. Actually, it's "before and middle," since the project is not finished.
I wrote a scathing indictment of the Home Run Derby several days before the Derby—a draft before my editor sees it—and then I watched the show, July 13. I may not have except that Serena, Jordan, and Novak all had the night off, and I was surprised that the NBA Finals had finished. Well, my "scathes"
There is a lot of excitement about the possibility of Jordan Spieth winning the British Open, July 16-19, and then completing the Grand Slam with a triumph in the PGA Championship in August. Quite understandable with Spieth being only the sixth to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year.
100 yards of dirt never looked so good to the Llano High School Athletic Department and Jacket football fans. What it means is—apparently—there will be no turning back. "This makes it real, that it is happening," insisted Athletic Director and head football coach, Craig Slaughter. Synthetic turf will be the floor of Llano Stadium for the 2015 football campaign.
A lot of us thought each time Holden Simpson came to bat for the Jackets he was going to get a base hit. That, of course, didn't happen, but a ground out or fly ball into the center fielder's glove did not erase the original belief when he next stepped into the batter's box. Soon, Holden will be playing—and attending classes—at Western Texas College in Snyder.
GRANITE SHOALS—If you Googled, "One person who doesn't like Leonel Manzano," you'd be greeted by "No Results Found." The highly-popular, readily available Marble Falls High School graduate (2004), who was silver medalist in the 1500-meter run in the 2012 Olympics—and competed in 2008--helped dedicate a hike and bike trail, May 9, in the community where he was raised. "I want to thank the people of Granite Shoals for the support and motivation they gave me,"
I'm going to talk about something you may have read a little about: The Brady Bunch—Tom and his partners in an alleged Jenny Craig crime. I will begin by saying I have no idea whether he or the ball boys are guilty of deflating footballs. Until all this happened, I thought it was PEOPLE who were deflated when they were depressed. The investigation has become too murky to know if Brady sent coded messages to the boys, maybe saying, "Let's take care of our Pound of Flesh." If you're like me—a ...
Ronald Reagan was in the middle of his presidency. Hoosiers would be called by some (including me) the greatest sports movie ever. 46-year-old Jack Nicklaus won the Masters, his 18th and final professional Major crown. And Llano High began playing baseball on grass and dirt near the elementary school. The year was 1986. "I just remember the amount of pride we had in protecting our home field,"
