I am not an MD, I’ve never played football, and I rarely review movies, so I guess I’m out of my league—but I saw Concussion, so here goes. I am indeed a fan, and I make a small portion of my living off the sport, writing about games. The movie is valuable to see so that you, at least, become aware, or gain more awareness, of the hazards of football’s collisions.
My son-in-law, John Crabb of Lakeway, had an original thought—which means my opening here won’t be original, but who can think of something clever and different about Alabama’s 45-40, national championship win over Clemson? “It sure was a good game” isn’t much of a grabber. John said, “It’s not so much the SEC that’s so powerful, it’s the area of the country.” Evidence: the last 11 national champs have been Texas, LSU, Florida (twice), Auburn, Alabama (four times), Florida ...
DC Comics heroes Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman joined Marvel Comics heroes Wolverine and Iron Man in the Community Building of Llano ISD at Monday night’s meeting of the School Board. To clarify, posters of faces of the Board members were drawn with costumes of those heroes. “Super Heroes of Schools” was the theme of the meeting honoring the Board members and administrators for Texas’ School Board Recognition Month.
I wrote an article a couple of years ago about our new Enhanced Learning Centers at Llano ISD. I decided to call this update about our ELC program “Maker Space” because our Enhanced Learning Centers share many features with the global Maker Space movement and I am hoping more people will make the connection between our ELC program and the great things that are going on in the Maker movement across the United States and the world. Our Enhanced Learning Centers are part of a larger initiative ...
GATESVILLE—The basketball boys won only once here in four games, December 29-30, but they garnered a comeback victory very much like the Jacket girls registered, December 18, against St. Michael’s. Goldthwaite led Llano, 55-53, with time running out. “I didn’t score till the fourth quarter,” Jaden Napolez told me. “It was not my best {game}.” He’s forgiven—he made two free throws which sent developments into overtime. Much more trouble ensued.
It’s hoped the Llano basketball girls had a better holiday than they had in a winless five-day stretch of games, as one month took on a new name, and one year took on a new number. “The last few weeks doesn’t matter,” head coach Joe Downey tried to emphasize. “What matters is focusing on district.” 25-4A play begins Friday, January 8, at home, against the league favorite, Liberty Hill. Day One The Jackets began their visit to the Burnet Holiday Classic, December 29, taking a 20-17 l ...
The Jacket boys not only got a great comeback win over Goldthwaite as time was running out on 2015—see companion story—but they picked up a 49-42 decision against Lago Vista on the second day of the new year. “By far the hottest we’ve started {all season},” declared head coach Blake Sieck.
The Llano Jr. High Daubers finished off an outstanding season with a clean sweep of the Navarro Panthers as the 7th Grade A and B teams and the 8th Grade A and B teams all recorded victories over the Panthers. With the victories, the Daubers brought home four championship trophies as each team clinched the 13-4A District Championship.
LHS Counselors Terrie Smarr and Nita Fields have felt truly blessed to work with the students at Llano High School this fall. We have shared some unique experiences with them and provided them with ongoing support to reach their full academic potential here and beyond. The counselors have been busy with the activities listed below. House Bill 5 has redefined the meaning of college to include ANY postsecondary training, with less emphasis placed on the traditional four-year college route and mor ...
SAN ANTONIO—If you win a state championship, playing in your final high school game is not a difficult time. The tears and remembrances will be put on hold for days, maybe months. But they will come at some point. Of course it is tougher when they are coupled with a no-playoff season or even one that ends after a bi-district or area contest. Such was the case for Llano.
