THE BABY JESUS WAS NOT BORN ON DECEMBER 25. What? Are you kidding me? Nope. The Christmas season brings with it a lot of great and wonderful traditions, but have you ever thought how these customs came about? You may be surprised! Let’s start with that Christmas date. The early church in the first few centuries did not celebrate the birth of Jesus arguing against celebrating all birthdays of saints and martyrs.
I believe in Santa Claus. I have to for the sake of my grandchildren. They are convinced that Santa and Mrs. Claus, who appeared recently at the lighting of the Old Blanco County Courthouse, are the real thing. All the other Santa’s are just their helpers. I have to believe in flying reindeer; stockings stuffed with candy, nuts and toys; Christmas trees twinkling with bright lights topped by angels or stars; and I believe that if I don’t behave as I ought, Santa just might give me a lump of ...
I WAS OFFENDED! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Was this allowed in Johnson City, Texas? Apparently so. As far as I knew there was no law against it. I walked up to the counter of a very popular store the other day and there was the most offensive, agitating, insensitive sign I ever saw.
“THE DATE WHICH WILL LIVE IN INFAMY” was yesterday, December 7, which was the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in where over 2,300 people died and 1,100 injured. It was a Sunday morning when the sneak attack by Japanese bombers was perpetrated on Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii.
SHORTLY AFTER THE ELECTION A FACEBOOK FRIEND REBUKED THEN UNFRIENDED ME. Admittedly, during the height of election fever I got carried away, posting clever memes that made fun of the candidate I wanted to lose. After the election I got particularly bugged by those misguided college babies protesting the election results and posted quite a bit of hilarity.
The worst thanksgiving service I ever saw advertised was from a fellowship in Dripping Springs that had a special “Thanking the Earth” ceremony at their church. I also saw this bumper sticker: “Did you thank a green plant today?” I could not get it out of my head how far away from God these people must have been to go from thanking their Creator to thanking the creation. Psalm 100 is subtitled “A Psalm of Thanksgiving,” and gives us four reminders on how to be thoughtfully thankful ...
On Saturday, May 21 the First Christian Curch will host a spaghetti supper from 5:00-7:00 pm. The meal (by donation) will be served in the exhibit hall at the Fair Grounds to raise funds for their upcoming trip to Zacatecas, Mexico. Joni Topper stated, "Helping with the vacation bible school there, last year, was definitely a highlight of the trip.
The Bible says in understated terms that “after fasting forty days and forty nights, Jesus was hungry.” So was I. Not only hungry, but starving. Literally. On January 6, 2016, I began a 40 day fast because I needed to get God’s attention to help me with all the troubling issues I was facing.
An All-Church Community Easter Son-Rise Service will be held at 7:00A.M. at Whittington's Hill. Everyone is invited to hear the message of the Resurrection given by Pastor Steve Sanchez and to sing special traditional songs commemorating this spectacular day played by Beverly Voron, both from Community Church of the Hills.
It is said that a doctor can tell a great deal about our physical condition simply by looking at our tongue. The same is true of our spiritual condition. How we use our tongues is a great indicator of our spiritual status. Did you know that all of our religion amounts to nothing if we do not learn to bridle our tongues?
