While a student at Brigham Young University I obtained employment as an Operating Room orderly at a local hospital. It was one of the most interesting jobs I have ever had. It was my privilege to pick up patients in their rooms and transport them to the OR and, after surgery, take them to Recovery and then back to their rooms.
A well-intentioned friend was concerned that I shared too much in my monthly prayer emails and that it might be better to be less honest about the struggles. Initially, I agreed, but upon further reflection, I thought that would be the wrong way to go. The whole purpose of a monthly newsletter, after all, is to have family and friends pray for these struggles. What may seem like over-sharing to some is genuine, heart-felt need for me.
While discussing the pros and cons of learning a second language, my brother Jay R reminded me of the story about a mouse that was being bullied by a big, ugly cat. The beleaguered mouse poured out its soul to an even tinier mouse who, upon hearing the sad tale, promised to be of help.
“THERE IS NO GOD. I AM AN ATHEIST.” – STEPHEN HAWKING Many Christians have the wishful notion that, perhaps, this brilliant theoretical physicist had a last-minute change of heart and turned to Jesus. At the risk of sounding harsh and insensitive, may I offer a contrary view? Talking about, hoping for and anticipating a last-minute deathbed conversion does no justice to the fact that Hawking led a reprobate, unbelieving life marked by ridiculing the God who made him, sustained him, ...
It was my privilege to visit the little town of Tierra Blanca every two to three weeks as I made the rounds of “my” schools. Three of the ten schools I supervised were located in the beautiful gulf state of Veracruz, Mexico. The school in Tierra Blanca was the smallest and most rural of those I called upon.
Let me be blunt: I hate waiting. For anything. I want it now…no, yesterday. But the sad fact of the Christian life is ya gotta sit still. It’s called waiting on God. But why does He always seem to take so long and why does Jesus always, always seem to make us wait? If you are going through something now and you’re not getting any help or answers, then you, too, are in The Waiting Room and there ain’t nothin’ you can do except, well, wait.
As a school administrator and as a parent I have seen many a young person balk when expected to follow certain rules and regulations. And it isn’t just youth, however, who get upset with having to follow rules. I recently traveled on Southwest Airlines. When you’re in a hurry, having to go through all the security rigmarole at the airport can be a real pain in the neck.
“WHEN I SEE GOD, I WILL TELL HIM THAT HE’S A NUT JOB!” said Rich the Atheist during a conversation I had with him on a college campus. Why would Rich utter such blasphemous words? Because he got so frustrated with the way I argued my points using what’s called “presuppositional apologetics.” Don’t be intimidated by that phrase, it simply means to defend the Christian faith (apologetics) by presupposing that God exists and that the Bible is valid, true and has the ability to ch ...
The emergency room doors banged open and a father, closely followed by his sixteen year-old son, ran through cradling the unconscious form of his eight year-old boy. The ER personnel responded quickly and whisked the boy away into the bowels of the big hospital leaving the two to pace back and forth in the waiting area. The boys had left Mom at home to go on a weekend outing with their Dad to do some camping and fishing and to just spend some quality time together in the great out-of-doors.
“DPS TROOPERS DIRECT REV. STEVE SANCHEZ OF JOHNSON CITY to step away from abortion rights demonstrators during the Texas Rally for Life at the Capitol on Saturday January 27, 2018.” That was the caption of a photo taken by Jay Janner of the Austin American-Statesmen. You may be wondering what I did.
