DALLAS — Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby’s table — not just his plate for heaven’s sake — is overflowing these days—and he tried to parcel out slices of the conference menu in his keynote address, July 18, at Football Media Days.  Baylor “Our conference and our Board {presidents and chancellors} don’t have any legal standing on some of the things that have taken place or are alleged to have taken place — but — we are very c ...
DALLAS — Gary Patterson’s eleven went through five overtimes its final two games of the 2015 season and won both — one in remarkable fashion. Why shouldn’t he be “excited” about what’s ahead for this campaign? “Our kids will do this as a group — makes it fun for a coach.” That’s an indication from Patterson his bunch can overcome such losses as quarterback Trevone Boykin and wide receiver Josh Doctson. Sophomore Foster Sawyer and A&M trans ...
A lot of ‘rasslin going on among the mascots. From left, an Oklahoma State Cowboy, Bevo of Texas, and an Iowa State Hawkeye. The white hat in back belongs to a Texas Tech Red Raider.
SAC now, SACks soon. That’s Strength and Conditioning — the norm throughout Texas and probably adjoining towns. In Llano, the six-week session, the final volunteer prelude to football practice, is over. The practice is not voluntary. Two-a-days begin on the first day of August. “When I was their age, we weren’t asked to do this,” 1991 Winters High graduate, Craig Slaughter, told me, concerning SAC.
Even when Leonel Manzano was running in a friendly fundraiser, which he is doing here, the grit and determination always accompanied him on his travels around the track.
If it’s over, he went out in style, which is no surprise. Leonel Manzano is one of the finest persons I’ve ever known. Forget about the nine state championships he won at Marble Falls High School, or his nine All-American seasons at Texas, and his silver medal in the 1500 meters in the 2012 Olympics in London.
Have you noticed a story or two where some folks are criticizing Kevin Durant for leaving Oklahoma City and going to Golden State? I’m patting myself on the back — since no one else does — and I’m chirping, “I told you so.” Remember six years ago when Clevelanders (Clevelandians?) were so mad at LeBron for using an ESPN interview to say he was leaving for Miami, and Cavalier fans used that as their reason for being upset? I said at the time, “Oh, ...
The Llano Intermediate All-Stars, consisting of boys ages 11-13 years old, recently competed in the District 26 Little League All Star tournament. The tournament was held in Blanco and the Llano All-Stars made a great showing as they won their first two games of the double elimination tournament and ultimately ended up placing third. The team consisted of Jacob Buchanan, Evan Creviston-Wines, Lane Doyle, Ryder Oldfield, Miguel Hernandez, Garrett Carney, Caleb Smith, Sammy Perry, Remington Hipp, ...
A tough one-day seminar on the hardwood, July 8, in San Saba. Callie Johnson of Llano has the ball and is receiving a forearm to the body. Looks like a foul to me.
BLANCO — It was somewhere between Painting by the Number and Monet — maybe closer to the former — but the brush strokes of the offense remained between the lines, July 6, in an 18-9, Llano baseball loss to the Panthers.  “I like the way we hit the ball,” said head coach Stephen Campbell, who was a (UIL mandated) spectator while Casey Landers and Taylor Sorensen ran the operation in the dugout and in the coaches’ boxes. “Getting {at} bats is ...
The Rangers and Yankees finished a game after 2:00 AM, June 28 in the Bronx. There had been a rain delay of more than three and a half hours. This was/is absolutely absurd, and it happens too often. Once would equal those eight letters. Umpires simply refuse to call a game within an appropriate time frame. “You’ve got to make it fair for both teams,” said Paul Nauert, umpire crew chief that night, uh, morning, at Yankee Stadium.
