LAMPASAS — Llano High boys and girls spent a successful January 19 day and night — playing to their strengths — in the Badgers Powerlifting Meet, which opened the season for this sport. Maybe the best athlete named Dak outside the Metroplex — Dakoda Trull — initiated his campaign by winning the 242-pound class. Brothers Brent (165) and Mason Greenwood (181) also took home gold medals, and on the girls’ side, ...
The Lady Jackets showed improvement from an 18-point loss in December at Salado, but they still missed by several meters of beating the Eagles, January 17. Salado turned a 30-30 tie after three quarters into a 46-40 win. There was a bye on January 20. “The kids are playing hard,” said head coach Jerry McSherry. “Wish they could get a win.” They are now 1-6 in district with five games remaining. Salado made its big statements&nb ...
Since my Inauguration Ball invitation was lost in the mail, I got a chance, January 20, to see a rare district basketball game not involving Llano. We’ll get to that contest after I report on the visiting Salado boys’ 56-27 whipping of the Jackets, January 17. In a one-win season (0-6 in district), this was particularly nasty: 13-2 after a quarter, 30-5 at half, 38-10 through three periods. “Very forgettable,” said head coach A ...
The Lady basketball Jackets lost to Liberty Hill and Taylor, January 10 and 13, with the setback to the Panthers on the 10th, but we’ll call chronological order not always so logical and first discuss the Ducks’ visit to Llano. “The kids played well,” said head coach Jerry McSherry. “{and} executed a good scheme well.” This one was close throughout, and Taylor led, 43-38, after three quarters.
I’ve been doing some painstaking research, which has taken a lot of time away from a busy schedule of watching basketball games. But, I think it has paid off. So you think Clemson is the National Champion in college football this season? I think a recount is needed — and only a small group of youngsters in Leningrad tried to botch this digging, and, fortunately, they were caught by police in Tuscaloosa, who — wrongly
Two more rough district encounters for the Llano boys, who ran into full-court presses that must have seemed at times they were like an elephant in the jungle pursued by a leopard. “Definitely wears you down,” said Jaden Napolez, who appeared to have the ball more than any teammate — in a backcourt that resembled a UFC cage. The first obstacle was at Liberty Hill, January 10.
LEANDER — The Llano boys came close to beating the Glenn High Grizzlies but wound up participating on the wrong side of history. Glenn, the new high school in a community growing faster than Twitter, overcame a fourth quarter deficit to beat the Jackets, 43-33, on the first Friday in January. Glenn, with ninth and tenth graders, is the newest member of 19-4A, a seven- school district. “We’re just not yet able to finish, ...
It was actually a good game but not overly exciting, I didn’t think. Of course I’m referring to most of Clemson’s 35-31 national championship win over Alabama, Monday night. Then a few things happened which made it go from, “This game is taking ages,” to, “One for the Ages.” Jalen Hurts, the freshman quarterback for the Crimson Tide (from Channelview, Texas) had labored through an average-to-bad night. Bama’s Steve Sarkisian, maybe th ...
LEANDER — The Jacket basketball girls made their first visit to Glenn High School here a most successful one, January 3, but was then thumped by a talented Burnet squad, January 6. We’ll take this in chronological order — sort of like enjoying the numbing feeling in your mouth (in the dentist chair) prior to the drilling. None of that sounds real pleasant, does it?
Courtney Reyna stares down the Leander Glenn Grizzly during the basketball games last week.
