If you, like many Americans, are able to count to fifty without using an abacus or taking off your shoes and socks, this column might be of interest to you. If you can’t count to fifty you definitely need to read this, or at least have someone read it to you.
The mighty British Army under the command of General Charles Cornwallis had pursued George Washington’s little rag-tag American forces clear across the State of New Jersey and, as far as he was concerned, had the pesky little war of independence all but wrapped up. In fear of the advancing enemy, Philadelphia, the American seat of government at the time, had been abandoned by its leaders and most of its citizens who were sympathetic to the cause of the American colonies.

I remember reading a letter to Ann Landers, the syndicated columnist who could solve everyone’s problems. A woman complained that she had just turned 40 and her life was over. How could anyone cope with being past life’s prime? Ms. Landers replied by publishing a letter she received from a young man in his early twenties who was suffering from a form of cancer that would inevitably, in a short time, end his life.
“I will never see age 40,” he said.

The other day I came across a six-inch by eight-inch board. Glued to it and coated over with varnish is a painting of a ship foundering in high seas. I remembered that it had been given to me by a third grade girl in Veracruz, Mexico.

AUSTIN — March 1 Super Tuesday election returns posted by the Texas Secretary of State’s Elections Division show 2.8 million (about 20 percent) of the state’s 14.2 million registered voters cast a ballot in the Republican Party Presidential Primary.
In the Democratic Party Presidential Primary, the statewide turnout was 1.4 million, or about 10 percent of the state’s registered voters.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz won his home state on the first night of March, but Donald Trump’s march to a Republican nomination was Super on Tuesday, as he triumphed in seven primaries—Cruz also gained decisions in Oklahoma and Alaska.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton continued to wear down Senator Bernie Sanders, as she easily captured Texas (65%), and six other states.
The LBJ Museum of San Marcos has announced the creation of the “Claudia Taylor Johnson Endowment” in honor of Lady Bird Johnson, the former First Lady of the United States.
