The Junior High and JV games with Hawley had to be canceled due to heavy rain in their area; but, the Hawley varsity showed up in Mason Friday night and, for the first half, gave the Punchers a slippery run for their money! The wet field at the Puncherdome made it difficult for both teams, and it would be halfway through the first quarter before the Punchers ended a long drive down the field for a 4-yard touchdown run by Jake Cockerham.
After taking two losses over the past couple weeks, the Punchers traveled to Abilene to take on the Wylie Bulldogs. The teams were evenly matched and at halftime the score was tied 0-0. 7th vs. Comfort The 7th grade Punchers had their first game Thursday versus Comfort and they had a great showing. The defense played very well and did a good job of running to the ball. In the process they pitched their first shutout of the season. Offense had an effective game as well as they were able to score twice and ended the game with a 12-0 victory.
Friday night, the Mason Punchers racked up their fourth win of 2017 season, and avenging a close defeat to the Iraan Braves in 2016 by winning the game 58-7. Though Mason's offense was putting the points on the scoreboard, the defense is the standout story of the night. Rather than relying on fourth down conversions by Iraan, Mason's defense forced turnover after turnover.
The White team traveled to Comanche last week to take on the Indians. Comanche capitalized on Puncher mistakes and won the game 18-6. The Punchers played hard and wereable to get the ball in the endzone to avoid the shut out.
7th vs Eldorado (T) The 7th grade Punchers headed for Eldorado for their first road trip and came out with a win and a shutout, 20-0. The boys played hard on both sides of the ball and showed great improvement for last week. No big plays were given up which made it hard for Eldorado to move the ball.
On Monday, October 16th the Mason ISD Education Foundation is holding its 2nd Annual Cattle Roundup at Jordan Cattle Auction. The concept of first pen cattle profits going to local charities began at the O-D Ranch with Edna and Conda H. Wylie around the turn of the century. The first auction proceeds were earmarked for the Care of Crippled Children.
The high school varsity cross country teams competed in Irion County this past Wednesday, September 20th. The Cowgirls came out on top, placing first and bringing home the gold. The Punchers placed 5th as a team. They will compete September 30th at the Round Rock McNeil meet which is also where the state meet is run.
The Punchers continued their 2017 streak last Friday, racking up a big 47-6 win over the Comfort Bobcats down in Kendal County.
