Mason’s young Jarrett Worrell has had a busy year. The American Hereford Association and the National Junior Hereford Association have bestowed recognition upon him as the 4th Grade Prospect Award recipient at the Junior National Hereford Expo, July 3-9, hosted in Kansas City, Mo.
According to Chloe Fowler, American Hereford Association, Hereford Youth Foundation of America, Associate Director of Youth Marketing and Education, Jarrett was awarded in his category Prospect Award- 3rd through 5th Grade.
Jarrett is ten years old and has been a member of the state and national associations his entire life. He joined the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) because he “wants to make friends and build relationships with people involved in this way of life.” He has the goal of running for the NJHA Board of Directors and looks forward to the possible opportunity.
The Hereford Youth Foundation of America was established in 1986 and is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated exclusively to scholarship and educational support of youth in the business of raising Hereford cattle. The mission of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America is to encourage, recognize and reward the development of life skills and values in the next generation of leaders for Hereford Youth. This award follows on the heels of Jarrett’s win in November 2020 for his Champion Purebred Pen of Three in the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout contest. He has also appeared in the Tell Your Story Challenge for Mason County 4H on video as a top three finalist. Jarrett ended up winning the entire contest. In 2019, Jarrett’s Polled Hereford Show Bull of the Year won in Nationals, and one must qualify by accumulated points throughout the 2018-2019 show season. Jarrett was additionally honored with the Fed Steer Shootout Championship Steer, champion pen, show bull of the year and polled exhibitor of the year.
As descendant of a 5th generation Angus and Hereford breeding family; Jarrett inherits years of knowledge that can only be passed from one branch of the family to the next. His parents, James and Shannon Worrell of Mason own and operate Worrell Enterprises which encompasses many facets of breeding and raising cattle. Jarrett’s great great grandparents started the ranch in the 1900s and since that time, it has grown to include breeding facilities, a show and sale facility, arena, and office. When Jarrett was interviewed by the American Hereford Association Junior Spotlight, he stated that “he’s been in the ring his whole life, but his first time was at 2 years old.” He continued, “He also loves to set goals and to work hard; he loves his stock show family and the cows he shows.” He also participates in baseball, soccer, tennis and shooting sports. In 4H Jarrett participates in food and nutrition as well as continuing to work at his personal interests in playing guitar and building robots.
In just ten short years, Jarrett has already proven himself to be a considerate competitor and steward of the family’s heritage. He is well-deserving of his accolades and there is no doubt that we will be closely following Jarrett’s career as he grows up in Mason.
