HORSESHOE BAY—There haven’t been too many coaches to succeed legends and be as successful as Fred Akers was. Those who followed Red Blaik at Army, Wilkinson and Switzer (OU), Lombardi (Green Bay) and Bryant at A&M and ’Bama, had their problems, but Akers led Texas to an 11-1 record in 1977, his first year after the retirement of Darrell Royal.
