HORSESHOE BAY—The man got two standing ovations before he got to the microphone. No surprise, really. College basketball’s Coach of the Year, Chris Beard, heading into his fourth season at Texas Tech, said, “I thought this team could win a national championship,” after the Red Raiders lost to Duke, 69-58, December 5, at Madison Square Garden. Tech didn’t win, but it lost in overtime in the NCAA championship game to Virginia, 85-77.
